A lot was on the line last week as teams posture for league tournament seeding and prepare for district tournament runs. So let’s look back at Week 9 and some of the top performances from around the state, and see who is this week’s “Big Hoss.”
Brooklyn Hicks Brooklyn Hicks 6'3" | CG Timberline | 2023 State #168 Nation WA | Timberline – 45 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals vs Central Kitsap 1/27
Another week and another monster game for Hicks. He’s helped lead Timberline to a 13-4 record and first place in the South Sound Conference. It’s easy to see why he continues to rack up the big games; easy finishes high above the rim, defenders who can’t stay in front of him, and an ability to push the pace and get to the line. Against Central Kitsap, Hicks got to the line 15 times in the first half alone, helping blow the game open in a second quarter the Blazers won 31-5.
Kaden Kastberg Kaden Kastberg 6'4" | SG Sumner | 2023 State WA | Sumner – 30 points, 7/9 3-Pt vs Graham Kapowsin 1/27
Kastberg showed signs earlier in the year of his kind of capability from 3-point range and it seems as though it all came together in this one. He’s got the confidence to hoist, the size to see over closing in defenders, and the touch to find consistent buckets from deep. It was a huge win for Sumner as it pushed them over the .500 mark to finish the regular season 11-10.
Davis Fogle Davis Fogle 6'6" | SF AZ Compass Prep | 2025 #105 Nation AZ | Anacortes – 42 points vs Lynden 1/25
Fogle has been one of the most impactful sophomores and transfers of the year. He’s helped Anacortes into a top-five ranking for a good portion of the season and has done it with more than a few performances like this. He’s shown for a while his ability to get into the paint and score, with his combination of dribbling skills and height, he is tough to stop when he gets a step on the defender. Now that he’s grown a bit more to 6-foot-5, and has developed into a threat from deep behind the 3-point line, Fogle is a nightly threat to explode for games like this.
David Zachman David Zachman 6'5" | SF Arlington | 2023 State WA | Arlington – 36 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 steals, 13/18 FG @ Stanwood 1/24
This is the type of game that exhibits Zachman’s potential and the strengths in his game. He can score in a bunch of ways and a lot of them don’t necessarily include him having to have the ball in his hands. He runs the floor well and is a strong, athletic finisher, he can hit the glass and put in second-chance points, and he has the stroke from deep to spot up or play on the pick and pop to knock down jumpers. It was an efficient game for the Eagles’ forward and his strength and patience go a long way to helping him score in such an efficient manner.
Jaylen Petty Jaylen Petty 5'11" | PG Auburn | 2025 State WA | Auburn – 39 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals @ Jefferson 1/24
Petty has been one of the best sophomores to pop up this season, leading his Auburn team in scoring and shooting the lights out. He hit a season-high nine 3-pointers against Jefferson, his second time this season hitting eight or more threes. He’s been a deadeye from long-range all year, hitting six-plus threes in six different games, and sinking seven-plus in four of their 17 games. Not only has his impact been felt from deep, but Petty’s been a key guy jumping passing lanes, racking up steals, and getting the Trojans out and running.
Soren Dalan Soren Dalan 6'10" | C W.F West | 2023 State WA | WF West – 27 points, 20 rebounds, 3 blocks vs River Ridge 1/23
Sometimes players get on a roll and there is not much you can do as an opposing team to stop them. Dalan seems to be on a roll of late, nabbing 20-plus points, 20-plus rebounds, and 3-plus blocks in three of his last four games up to this contest. He’s just an immovable force when he gets down low and when he does decide to move he’s reposting, repositioning, and floating back and forth to free himself up for passes and offensive boards. He’s averaging 20.8 points per game and 15.1 rebounds on the season.
Christian King Christian King 6'8" | SG Seattle Prep | 2023 State WA | Seattle Prep – 36 points vs Garfield 1/23
King missed a good stretch of games earlier in the season but he’s back and proving why he is one of the top recruits in his class with games like this. He is well-known to be one of the top shooters in his class but the big guard has also been a monster at the rim on both ends of the court, blocking shots and dunking on whoever gets in his way. He’s a complete scorer and this type of performance against one of the top teams in the state is just another example of his offensive prowess.
Emmett Marquardt Emmett Marquardt 6'6" | SF Garfield | 2023 State WA | Garfield – 31 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 6 3PM @ Seattle Prep 1/23
Marquardt quietly has been one of the most skilled big men across the state this season, rebounding, scoring from inside and out, and defending the rim. He showed his complete game against Seattle Prep and offered a glimpse into his potential to put up big points from beyond the arc, as well as make his presence known inside and on the glass. He knocked down six 3-pointers against the Panthers and helped the Bulldogs stave off an upset, winning 69-63.
Braydon Olson Braydon Olson 6'2" | CG Mark Morris | 2024 State WA | Mark Morris – 40 points @ Woodland 1/23
Olson was in the zone from the start. He came out and hit a deep three to open the scoring for the Monarchs and continued to get hot from beyond the arc in the first quarter, draining four shots from downtown. He ended the first quarter with 17 points and capitalized on his ability to make space with his dribble, get to his spots, and use screens effectively off the ball to hit the spot-up shots. He was active in transition and overall looked extremely confident taking his man on and leading the attack.
“Big Hoss” Performance of the Week
Julian Castro | Granger – 50 points, 7 assists, 5 steals, 3 rebounds vs Highland 1/27
This week’s “Big Hoss” is a 5-foot-9 sophomore guard who exploded against Highland and racked up 34 of his 50 points in the second half, at one point drilling seven shots in a row. He was highly efficient from all areas, shooting 19-for-30 from the field, 8-for-9 from the free throw line, and would have done even better had he not started forcing shots at the end of the game. He almost exclusively shot from either 3-point range or got to the basket, and was outstanding using the off-hand floater to hit just inside the paint. His passing was just as impressive as his scoring and Castro controlled the game with a patient attack, great footwork, and a smooth stroke from outside.
