Continue ReadingBoy, what a first week we had. Tons of great jamborees kicked us off and then we got straight to business with countless players busting out for huge performances. We had a few 40-point games, some near 20-20 showings, and a few close calls on triple-doubles. They came from all over the state and all divisions of play. This isn’t nearly all of the action but I’ve taken nominations throughout the week, picked up a few on my own, and narrowed it down to one, single game, top performance of the week. Here are some of the nominees from Week 1.
Morgan Anderson | Raymond – 26 points, 8 rebounds, 6 steals vs Onalaska 11/29
I wrote about Anderson in the offseason as a potential breakout player with the departure of Tre Seydel. Seydel was one of the leading scorers in the state last season and now it looks like Anderson is sliding right into the role Seydel vacated. Anderson has a nice jumper that is especially deadly from the mid-range. He went 9 for 12 from inside the arc on Tuesday and also made his presence felt on the defensive end with those six steals.
Brooklyn Hicks Brooklyn Hicks 6'3" | CG Timberline | 2023 State #168 Nation WA | Timberline – 34 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals @ O’Dea 11/29
Hicks was a one-man show against O’Dea, keeping the Blazers close with play after play at the rim. He’s an elite slasher that made countless and-one’s and lived in the heart of the Irish defense. Timberline came up short, but it was a superb effort from Hicks who should have many more games like this throughout the rest of the season.
Wesley Bjornsgard Wesley Bjornsgard 6'4" | SF Capital | 2023 State WA | Capital – 16 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals @ Spanaway Lake 11/29
To anyone who watched Bjornsgard this summer, this kind of output shouldn’t be a surprise. He has the strength, shooting, and playmaking ability to fill up the stat sheets. As we get a little deeper into the season, it wouldn’t be surprising to call this showing one of his more modest outputs.
Dylan Wiggins Dylan Wiggins 6'6" | SF Bellarmine Prep | 2024 State WA | Bellarmine – 27 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal vs Lincoln 11/30
The junior missed significant time last season but the strong-bodied forward has shown his improving game over the summer and now into the high school season. He’s a big-time worker on the boards but is starting to show the work on his jumper is paying off too. Wiggins should be one of Bellarmine’s top playmakers as well, giving a little taste of that with five dimes in this game.
Kelson Gebbers Kelson Gebbers 6'6" | SF Brewster | 2023 State WA | Brewster – 27 points @ Chelan 11/29
Gebbers was simply butter against one of the tougher 1A teams Tuesday night. He was lining up from three, hitting turnarounds from the elbow, and looked poised and able to score just about at will. As one of the top players in the state, Gebbers should continue to churn out these types of games all season.
Zach Luz Zach Luz 6'1" | CG Mount Rainier | 2024 State WA | Mount Rainier – 41 points, 10 rebounds, 4 steals vs Bonney Lake 11/30
Luz was a serious contender for performance of the week with this huge 40-point game against Bonney Lake. He has been rising up my radar fast, first showing some scoring burst from range at the Prep Hoops Top 250 Expo, then displaying the strength needed to attack the rim at the Redhawks Slamboree. It seems he’s hit his stride early in the year and looks like a rising player in the 2024 class.
Tait Spencer Tait Spencer 6'3" | SG Great Futures Prep | 2025 State WA | Battle Ground – 42 points vs Columbia River 11/29
After scoring nearly 27 points per game last season, Spencer has started this year off with another huge scoring outburst. The crafty lefty is a methodical scorer that knows how to turn his man and create space for the shot. He’s already tied his season high from last year, could he crack 50 at some point? We’ll have to wait and see.
Eamon Monahan Eamon Monahan 6'1" | PG Eastmont | 2023 State WA | Eastmont – 37 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals vs Hanford 11/26
This was a monster performance from a sleeper in the 2023 class. Monahan showed some of this potential last season as a strong, tall, guard who can do a little bit of everything. He had a fair amount of impactful teammates graduate from last year’s squad and it seems he decided to pick up the slack all by himself. While he was an efficient 12 of 19 from inside the arc, the impressive development was his shooting behind the line, going 4 of 8 from 3-pt.
“Big Hoss” Performance of the Week
Yanni Fassilis Yanni Fassilis 6'5" | SF Union | 2023 State WA | Union – 32 points, 12 rebounds, 8 assists, 4 blocks vs North Kitsap 11/26
This week’s “Big Hoss” could only be one guy. It was one of the earliest games of the season but Fassilis’ performance has held firm throughout Week 1. He absolutely dominated the game from start to finish, on both sides of the court. He scored inside, and outside, owned the glass, defended the rim, and all while running point guard for the Union Titans. Not to mention, he did it against one of the 2A favorites, North Kitsap. It was a big statement for Fassilis who looks to be picking up right where he left off last season after making the 4A All-Tournament team.
