On Friday night we had some good basketball being played all across the state as more teams continue to open up their 2022-2023 seasons. We spotlight some of those performances here. If we missed a top performer, let us know! Email Michael@PrepHoops.com and be sure to send in your top performer picks following the games each week!
Our first top performer from Friday night should have been included earlier in the week as well following his performance on Tuesday night. First, Hammer would drop 25 points as Westville beat Kansas 56-40. But Hammer’s Tuesday night performance in the season opener against Sallisaw deserves a shoutout as well. Hammer would fill up the stat sheet on opening night with 14 points, 17 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 blocks. Westville has opened the season with back to back wins and they look to continue that momentum into this week, when they participate in the Colcord Hoopfest in eastern Oklahoma.
Perfect. There’s no other word to describe the game that Putnam City North’s CJ Smith CJ Smith 6’7″ | SF Putnam City North | 2023 State OK had on Friday night. As the Panthers rolled to a 100-67 victory over Midwest City, Smith was perfect from the field. He would finish with a game-high 35 points on the night and went 11-11 from the field and then also was 3-3 from beyond the arc. Smith is such an interesting senior guard to watch in the senior class. When I caught him in person a little over a year ago, he was absolutely dominant on the floor. So far, Smith is off to a great start. All eyes should be on Smith and PC North on Thursday when they square off with Douglass in the Joe Lawson Tournament in Norman.
Pocola opened the season with a 57-31 win over Wilburton as they look to return to the state tournament this season. The Indians were led by sophomore forward Dakotah Terrell Dakotah Terrell 6’8″ | C Pocola | 2025 State #335 Nation OK , who finished with a double-double on Friday night. Terrell would go for 25 points and 11 rebounds in the win. Those are the types of numbers that Terrell expects to put up after a breakout freshman season and an outstanding offseason. He’s definitely a prospect on the rise in the state’s 2025 class and we’re going to have our eyes on him as they face off with Broken Bow and fellow top performer Kieler Young Kieler Young 6’2″ | CG Broken Bow | 2023 State OK on Friday.
Highlights
After opening the season down in Texas with a loss at the Thanksgiving Hoopfest, Bartlesville returned home and opened the season with an 85-65 win over Sapulpa. The Bruins were led by their superstar guard David Castillo David Castillo 6’1″ | PG Sunrise Christian Academy (KS) | 2024 #80 Nation KS . The junior would finish with 42 points and also dished out 6 assists in the win on Friday night. Bartlesville will play host to Bixby on Tuesday night and this has to be considered a must-see game. Castillo, the top prospect in the state’s 2024 class will square off with Bixby’s Parker Fredrichsen, one of the state’s best prospects in the 2023 class. Scoring in that one will be off the charts.
Catoosa improved to 2-0 on the season as they beat up on Locust Grove with a 114-98 victory on Friday night. For the second time in a week, Greyson Lewallen Greyson Lewallen 6’2″ Catoosa | 2023 OK is considered a top performer after going for 27 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists in the win on Friday night. Lewallen was also featured earlier in the week as he would finish with 30 points, hitting seven shots from beyond the perimeter in the win over Vinita. Catoosa will now shift gears this week and go to Alva for a tournament. They open up the tourney on Thursday when they face South Barber. Lewallen wasn’t the only Catoosa standout from Friday night’s games either.
Highlights
I think that it’s safe to say that Broken Bow senior guard Kieler Young Kieler Young 6’2″ | CG Broken Bow | 2023 State OK had the best week last week. Broken Bow opened their season on Friday night with a win over DeQueen, Arkansas with a 75-41 win. Young would score 48 points and also grabbed 12 rebounds in the Friday win. The next day, Broken Bow also beat Hugo 77-74. Young would finish with 45 points and 13 rebounds one day after going for nearly 50 in the season opener. Young averaged 20+ points per game as a junior last year. Young is very clearly one of the best scorers in the state and he puts that scoring on display this week against McAlester on Tuesday and Pocola on Friday.
Highlights
Purcell got two wins last week after beating Washington 64-46 on Tuesday and then got a 55-47 win over Lindsay on Friday night. Leading the way on Friday was sophomore guard Kobe Freeman Kobe Freeman 5’11” | PG Purcell | 2025 State OK . He would finish with 23 points, 5 steals and 5 rebounds on the night. Freeman is a player that we watched quite a bit this offseason and we’ve already written about how we like this Purcell team this season in Class 3A to not only be a dark horse, but they have to be considered a contender. The Dragons will be participating in the Madill tournament later on this week and they open up tourney play against Sulphur on Thursday.
Crossings Christian improved to 2-0 on the young season after beating Oklahoma Christian Academy 79-69 on Friday night. It was the first home game of the season and freshman sensation Phoenix Woodson Phoenix Woodson 6’8″ | SF Crossings Christian | 2026 State OK impressed the home fans on Friday. He would finish with 29 points and was 13-14 from the field and a perfect 3-3 from beyond the arc. Woodson is right there with fellow freshman Jalen Montonati Jalen Montonati 6’7″ | SF Owasso | 2026 State OK for the top prospect in the class and he showed why on Friday. Crossings is a very talented and young team this season. Earlier this week, 2025 guard Cal Furnish Cal Furnish 5’11” | PG Crossings Christian | 2025 State OK was a top performer for scoring 20+ points in the season opener against Millwood.
Another player that should have been featured earlier this week and had a great week overall is Destiny Christian senior forward Sentinel Moore Sentinel Moore 6’8″ | PF Destiny Christian | 2023 OK . The big man was dominant in both games this week for Destiny as they would beat Bishop McGuinness and Millwood. In the McGuinness win, Moore finished with 20 points, 6 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. On Saturday, in the win over Millwood, Moore finished with 22 points, 14 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Moore is a very athletic player and he’s averaging right around 20 points per game after four games already this season. He’s definitely a senior to watch this season.
Anytime you’re scoring 100+ points in a game, you usually have a few players that stood out throughout the night. In addition to Lewallen shining in the Friday win over Locust Grove, junior forward Titus Miller Titus Miller 6’6″ | SF Catoosa | 2024 State OK showed why he’s considered one of the better junior forwards in Class 4A this season. He would also score 27 points in the win over the Pirates and would also grab 15 rebounds. Catoosa has a very improved lineup and they are putting up plenty of offense so far this season. As mentioned earlier, the Indians will head west to Alva this week for a tournament. Then we will see them in person next week when they host Hilldale.
