In this preview, we take a look at the defending Class 6A state champion Edmond North Huskies.
2021-2022 RESULTS
Edmond North brought home their second state championship in school history by knocking off Jenks, Booker T Washington and Moore to win the Class 6A gold ball in March. The Huskies came into the 2021-2022 season with a blend of talent and inexperience and it was unclear around this time last year how far the Huskies could go. Edmond North would start the season 4-3 with two losses to rival Edmond Memorial and another to Mustang. From there, the Huskies would rattle off 20 wins with only 2 losses.
We saw the emergence of 2024 forward Dylan Warlick Dylan Warlick 6'6" | SF Edmond North | 2024 State #226 Nation OK , who became a double-double machine. He was one of the best players not only in Class 6A last season but in the state and he’s continued to rise as a prospect. And the scariest part about Edmond North’s run a season ago was that it looked like it could be the start of a dynasty. As you’re about to read, everyone is back for another run at the state championship.
2022-2023 OUTLOOK
We mentioned earlier that Edmond North was an incredibly young team last season and they weren’t the favorites coming into the season. In fact, last season was about as deep as we’ve seen in recent memory but the Huskies found a way to not only make it to the state tournament, but to capture the gold ball. Fast forward to this season and the target could not be bigger. Edmond North comes into this season as the heavy favorites to repeat as they return all five starters from last year’s state championship team.
And it’s not just that the Huskies return all five starters, they also got a key move-in to add to the lineup and their 2024 class is incredibly talented. They have five prospects in the 2024 class that are currently ranked within our Top 30 in the 2024 rankings. They also have a few other ranked prospects in the various class. That’s easy math even for us. That means they will have impactful players coming off the bench. Edmond North is not only one of the more talented teams in the state, they might also be the deepest.
We already have the Tournament Of Champions circled on our calendar in Tulsa in late December. The Huskies headline a tournament field on the boys side that might be the deepest it’s ever been. It also features Bartlesville and their star 2024 guard David Castillo David Castillo 6'1" | PG Sunrise Christian Academy (KS) | 2024 #80 Nation KS . The field also features the defending champions from Class 5A, 4A and 2A. The Huskies might be the best team in the field but they’ll be tested mightily in that tourney.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
It’s hard to not say the rich got richer but here we are. Edmond North was bringing back all five starters and in addition to that, Dontrell Yearby Dontrell Yearby 6’2″ | CG Edmond North | 2024 State OK moved into the district after averaging 16 points per game for Northwest Classen last season. Yearby immediately provides the Huskies another scoring threat on the offensive side of the ball and more depth in the backcourt. And if you had to point to a thing the Huskies were lacking, and it’s a stretch, but the Huskies could have more firepower from their guards. With Yearby now in the fold, it’s going to be interesting to see what the Huskies and head coach Scott Norris do with various lineups throughout the year.
We mentioned above that 2024 forward Dylan Warlick Dylan Warlick 6’6″ | SF Edmond North | 2024 State #226 Nation OK was a walking double-double and honestly he turned into one of the most consistent and best overall players in Class 6A. He averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Huskies and he’s back for more this season. Warlick has emerged as a top five prospect within the state’s 2024 class and when it comes to his future as a prospect, Warlick will be more of a wing at the next level. We’ve already started to see him develop that part of his game as he plays further away from the paint. It will be interesting to see how he plays within the Edmond North offense. How much time he spends in the paint as opposed to the perimeter.
Highlights
Edmond North is full of talent, that’s been the consensus on this preview. And leading it all on the offensive side of the ball will be another 2024 guard in Tatum Ridge Tatum Ridge 6’2″ | CG Edmond North | 2024 State OK . The junior guard emerged as a great facilitator last season as he helped lead the Huskies to a state championship. And coming off that state title, Ridge became more of a playmaker and scorer while playing with his travel team throughout the spring and summer. He’s a player that we got a chance to watch quite a bit and his shooting from the perimeter steadily improved and he’s going to be surrounded by fellow playmakers. We could see Ridge blow up in a big way this season.
Highlights
From the start of last season to where we are today, one of the most improved players in the state has to be 2024 guard TO Barrett TO Barrett 6’4″ | SG Link Academy | 2024 #138 Nation MO . This is a prospect that has gone from one of the better defensive guards to a complete player and now a true national prospect. Barrett has ascended all the way to the #2 spot within the Oklahoma rankings, only behind potential McDonald’s All American David Castillo David Castillo 6’1″ | PG Sunrise Christian Academy (KS) | 2024 #80 Nation KS . Barrett was also rated in the Prep Hoops national rankings that came out last week. Barrett has the ability to be a lockdown guard on defense but it’s the improvements he’s made as a playmaker and a shooter on offense that make him one of the best guards in the region.
Our last Edmond North player to watch is Edmond North junior forward Xavier Ross Xavier Ross 6’7″ | PF Edmond North | 2024 State OK . The Huskies have a wealth of talent returning but especially in the front court. Ross has the chance to really blow up this winter if he picks up where he left off this offseason. The big man had a strong spring and summer while playing for Buddy Buckets. He’s currently trying to make an impact on the football field. But we really like Ross as a prospect on the rise in the state’s 2024 class for hoops. The Huskies provide so much depth and so many different match-up possibilities that they’re going to be a problem for opponents. Ross could flourish this season.
