Santa Ana Mater Dei took home the Challenge of Champions bracket championship, beating Corona Centennial in Sunday’s title game. Below is a breakdown of the All-Event Team, selected by myself, Ronnie Flores of Ballislife and Frank Burlison of Burlison on Basketball. We’ll start with the most outstanding player in the main bracket, followed by the rest in alphabetical order.
Most Outstanding Player: Tounde Yessoufou, 2025, St. Joseph (Santa Maria)
The 6-foot-6 wing/forward captivated onlookers with his inside out scoring and shot-making abilities while averaging 33.7 points per game in the event, including a 40-point performance in a close loss to Corona Centennial in the opening round. Yessoufou is a freakish vertical athlete with great hands, touch and footwork inside. Our biggest takeaway from seeing him last weekend is he has improved his perimeter game drastically. The sophomore is a legitimate three-point shooting threat who can create offensive off the bounce, as well.
Aaron McBride Aaron McBride 6'7" | PF Corona Centennial | 2023 State CA-S , 2023, Corona Centennial – The 6-foot-6 Loyola Marymount-commit was both efficient and impactful on both ends of the floor for the Huskies. McBride is a multi-positional defender whose ability to shot block and rebound ignites Centennial’s fast-break attack. McBride is also usually the guy who finishes off those transition opportunities with his rim-running, catching and finishing abilities.
Caleb Versher, 2025, St. Bernard – I really liked the improvements Versher made over the spring and summer heading into his sophomore year. The 6-foot-3 shooting guard has grown into his frame and his more sturdy base has resulted in him being able to do more on the court. Versher was knocking down catch-and-shoot three’s with smooth regularity and showed an increase in aggressiveness and confidence on the offensive end of the floor.
Che Brogan, 2026, Mater Dei – Brogan, who is the son of former Mater Dei standout, and current assistant coach, Tom Lewis, has an extremely versatile game for his class. The 6-foot-5 wing can really play every position on the floor because of his fundamental approach to the game and advanced skill-set. Brogan made high IQ passes and decisions under pressure, made perimeter shots and flashed some back to the basket game, as well. You can tell Brogan has been around the game for a long time based on how he carries himself on the floor.
Chris Nwuli Chris Nwuli 6'7" | SF Wasatch Academy | 2025 State #38 Nation UT , 2025, Bishop Gorman – Nwuli was the go-to guy for Gorman with David Nealy David Nealy 6'2" | SG Stranahan | 2026 #27 Nation FL and Juni Mobley sidelined on the weekend and the bouncy forward didn’t disappoint. Nwuli was his usual transition scoring-self, using his 6-foot-7 frame, along with his fluid and bouncy athleticism, to push the ball in transition and finish above the rim. It was good to see the sophomore be the primary focus of the defense in the half-court setting because he was able to flash some face-up shooting and straight-line drive finishing ability.
