Freshman Showcase: Max’s Guard Standouts

Coming in at 5'9 he's fearless attacking the basket, and just seems to glide around the floor with the ball in his hands. He's so fluid changing his directions to weave in and out of defenders, and has excellent body control that allows him to hang in the air and finish in a variety of ways inside. DeAndre isn't just a scorer though, as he excels at drawing extra defenders into the paint, creating a lot of space on the perimeter for him to kick it out to open shooters. He's such an unselfish point guard and you never knew what he was going to do when he put the ball on the floor. Has a really quick spin move that he uses to get into the lane, and Jayden excels at dishing out last-second scoop passes right into the hands of his bigs around the rim. Playing alongside a 6'8 big, Jayden did a nice job of getting him the ball around the basket leading to some efficient scoring opportunities for his team. The freshman guard showed he can join up with a brand new group of players and just go out and dominate a game. Whether it was scoring, facilitating, or locking up on defense, Mike just finds ways to make plays. Not sure there was a better isolation scorer all weekend, as there's not a shot that Wilson can't make and isn't willing to take. He found ways to use his crafty handle and strong frame to get to the rim and either convert or draw fouls. Just a confident player who never looked sped up and was able to get to his spots off the dribble. Smooth and consistent release that remained the same even with a hand in his face contesting, allowing him to hit his shots at a high percentage in the game I saw. I saw able to catch two of his games, and in game #2 he took over with his jumper. From all over the court Will was draining shots, including a few pull-up jumpers in transition as he stopped on a dime and left defenders flying right by him as they didn't anticipate the pull-up. Has a shifty handle and does a nice job of always keeping his eyes scanning the floor. He has a strong frame and was fearless attacking the basket. Loves to initiate some contact around the rim to either bump his man off to create separation, or draw a foul as he goes up to finish. Within the first few minutes of the game I watched he racked up two and-one finishes and another tough finish through some contact. Just found ways to create separation on the perimeter to get off his shot, but wasn't afraid to drive to the hoop either. Showed excellent footwork to stop on two feet, get guys in the air, and then pivot towards the basket to finish inside. Not the biggest or most athletic player, but is so crafty and knows how to use the tools he has to find ways to impact the game. Another thing that stood out was how much fun you could tell Alex was having out on the court.
