Expert Analysis
Brett Pickarts | Prep Hoops Scout
Sweeney, a 5’10 lead guard prospect for Appleton North, faced tough pressure from Neenah’s backcourt players all night. Sweeney was able to limit turnovers, facilitate offense and get multiple trips to the line on Friday night. Sweeney is a true two-way player and spent a majority of the night pressuring the guards of Neenah and disrupting their flow on offense. Sweeney is one of the staples in the North lineup that is contending for a conference championship in the Fox Valley Association. He finished with 13 points with 9 of them coming from the line due to Sweeney’s explosiveness with the ball. Sweeney can really hurt you scoring on drives, but has tremendous court vision to be able to see his teammates on dump offs, kickouts, and skip passes off the bounce. Will is one of the premier guards in the valley.

Sweeney never appears to tire on the basketball court. He goes full speed from the opening minute until the closing seconds. He is a terrific ball handler, a solid on-ball defender and a point guard who can push the ball in transition while also getting into the lane in the half court. At times, Sweeney found the terrain near the hoop difficult to navigate against Team Warwick as the South Dakota club had 6-9 and 6-6 forwards waiting for him. He he nonetheless finished with 16 points and did a solid job of making foul shots near the end of the contest in an effort to salt away the win. Unfortunately for Team 1848 , a late three did them in as Team Warwick came from behind to register a 72-71 victory in a physical, hotly contested game.

Will is developing into a true floor general. He’s going to impact the game without scoring, as he’s the most vocal guy on the floor, is a pass-first player, and gives it 100% on every defensive possession. If there’s a loose ball in his area, you can bet he’ll be the first one on the floor fighting for possession. Even in a gym filled with whistles and squeaky shoes, you could hear will calling out plays on the opposite side of the court as he would get his team into their offense. When scoring on his own, Will is fearless going at bigger players around the basket, and had some impressive finishes through contact.

A true point guard who plays with the ball on a string, Sweeney is in charge of setting up his teammates and taking his own scoring opportunities. And he excelled in both during Team 1848 ‘s loss to Wisconsin Academy . The steady Appleton North standout finished with 12 points and swished three shots from outside the arc when defenders had their hands down. He struggled a bit from the line as he made just three-of-six foul shots, but he did not struggle with his effort, leadership and hard-nosed on-ball defense. Solid player in virtually all aspects of the game.
