Typically, we will have already started with some tournaments at this time of the year to get things kicked off, but there has to be a compromise on both ends. Not only will the season start late, but it will be a condensed season, so teams and players must get off to hot starts. Here we will focus on a league that, like every other team, has had a shake-up. In this league, all classifications are combined but still a very middle of the pack group where one group will have to separate themselves in the 5A/4A/3A Colorado Springs Metro League.
Josh Rall – Canon City
6’1 combo-guard Josh Rall had a huge year from a scoring standpoint, which was very under the radar. Rall averaged 17.3 points a game in his junior season, and there was a stint during the season that he looked like the Tigers’ best player. Rall got to his spots inside of the paint and attacked the rim as a runner. He is a physical guard that uses his strength and size. He gets to the FT line, turns defense to offense, and also grabs boards and go. Canon City has an overlooked backcourt that is very strong, and if Rall can put up another season where he is scoring with ease, then I see them being the favorites in the conference.
JJ Dickerson – Mesa Ridge
Dickerson is the team’s workhorse that gives the team a mobile, assertive player, and can play as well as defend multiple positions. Dickerson does plenty of things beyond the scoreboard while also providing the team with a reliable scoring option. Dickerson averaged 9.3 points and 3.4 rebounds and also being a force on the defensive end by playing the passing lanes and holding his ground against the big guys. Dickerson had a high of 18 points and was forced to go up against some outstanding players last season while holding his own. This season it will be about getting his team into good positions and it turning into wins. If everything buys in in his new league and he can keep his competitive edge, Mesa Ridge will surely be in a better position.
Jaiden Flowers Jaiden Flowers 5'10" | CG Palmer | 2022 State CO – Palmer
With the summer that Flowers had going into a big junior season, I expect big things. Flowers has been in plenty of big games and with his Colorado Hawks team has a role where he gets to shine. Flowers understands what to do on the floor, and his ability to space the floor with his outside shot will work dividends for the Terrors. In his sophomore season, he was a valuable piece for the team that had some extreme highs, like when he went for 16 points to issue Mead their only loss on the season or a career-high 20 points against Far Northeast Warriors. Flowers has continued to work on his game, is shooting the ball extremely well, and getting more comfortable with the ball in his hands. I am expecting him to be one of the conference’s top standouts.
Quavaun Johnson – Widefield
Johnson is a player that was a glue guy for Widefield. With so many great ball-handlers around him a season ago, he found holes in the defense and played more off the ball. He worked extremely hard on both ends of the floor and provided the energy that kept him on the floor. Johnson put up 4.5 points and 3.6 rebounds a game as a player put in the game to get things going. Johnson is a versatile player that did not have to score a ton to stand out. He was aggressive on the boards, defending multiple positions, and was the team’s spark. Hopefully, this offseason, he worked on his game as he will be asked to elevate his game as Widefield will need everyone locked in to be as good as they were last year.
