With conference play underway, let’s take a look at the sixth- through 10th-leading assist men in Colorado’s Class 3A.
6. Mateo Mendoza, 6-0, G, Colorado Springs Christian, 2019, 4.7 apg
Mendoza plays with several players who can put the ball in the basket and he makes sure the stay well fed. Helping to pace the team’s trio of double-figure scorers – Brandon Pitt (18.5 ppg), Kolby Walker (16.9 ppg) and Caleb Stockton (13.3 ppg) – Mendoza (3.3 ppg) is averaging 4.7 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game while attempting just 42 field goals in 12 games.
7. Isaac Gallegos, 5-9, G, The Academy, 2019, 4.6 apg
This kid is instant offense for the Wildcats, leading the team with 18.4 points per game and also averaging 4.6 assists. He’s a pretty good shooter from 3-point range but does a lot of his scoring in transition as a result of his 5.1 steals per game.
8. Jaylen Johnson-Myles, 5-9, G, DSST: Green Valley Ranch, 2022, 4.5 apg
The first freshman to appear on this list, Johnson-Myles is off to an excellent start in his first prep season. He averages 6.6 points, 4.5 assists, 2.2 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game and is looking early on like a player to watch over the next three and a half seasons.
9. Armando Saucedo, 6-1, G, Brush, 2019, 4.5 apg
Saucedo has always been an active, strong and athletic player for the Beetdiggers. This year, his offensive contributions have seen a significant uptick in a number of ways. He’s scoring more, at 15.4 points a night, but also averages nearly two more assist per game than he did last season.
10. Seth Fuqua, 5-11, G, The Vanguard School, 2019, 4.4 apg
Class 3A’s third-leading scorer with an average of 23.0 points per game, Fuqua also averages 4.4 assists, 4.4 rebounds and 2.7 steals. This kid has special-game potential. Just look at the triple-double – 15 points, 10 rebounds and 11 steals – he posted against Buena Vista on Jan. 12 for an example.
