There were debates about who should go where, new players added and one of the best developments – players that were high in the rankings that put in the work and are now a lot higher. Here are five guards that made the most movement heading into the 2018-19 season.
Davon Walker – Grandview
Walker is not a player who surprises you with off the chart numbers but he has seen his stock grow with his leadership and ability to win. He is a natural born leader that is selfless, is two dimensional and plays outside of his 5’7 frame. Davon has put in the work as a state champion and followed that up with an offseason where he competed, led his team to countless victories and really stood out in showcases. He is a smooth lefty that can make a team pay with a quick first step and ability to mix it up from mid-range or beyond the arc. He can space the floor with his shooting but also can set up teammates with no-look passes. He pushes the pace and is creative with the ball and that is why he has made significant movement and lands at No. 12 in the Senior class and is a Top-3-point guard in the state.
T.J Boykins – Douglas County
What Boykins lacks in size he makes up for in heart. Boykins is the ultimate competitor that brings it on both ends of the floor. He is a tenacious defender and he is also a player that could be so disruptive offensively. He has the ability to shoot, he sets up teammates, he excels in the pick and roll and doesn’t commit too many turnovers. Once he starts finishing at the rim he will be one of the state’s best players and a player that could rise. He moved into our Top-15 with a strong finish to the season and he also got it done in the offseason as well as he did not back down from anyone. Boykins is a player that you build around based on leadership alone and that is why he is one of the state’s best floor generals. This is a crucial season for him.
Jaylen Eikenberg – Rock Canyon
Jaylen is the best perimeter player in the state and this will be the year he proves it all while most likely leading the team in every category as well. He will be asked to do more than many players in the state and the success of the team revolves around him. Last season he was a glue guy/role player that did all of the small things which allowed Rock Canyon to be one of the best teams in the state. He was not relied upon on offense as much and he focused on the defensive end. With the seniors from last year graduating Jaylen made it a point to become a more all-around player and his work is paying dividends. He has shown that he can be the go to scorer that gets the offense set up, can knock down shots when left available and makes the team better as a playmaker as he can play on and off ball. Jaylen is the No. 20 player in the class and seen that increase because he is one of the hardest workers in the state.
Payton Egloff – Regis
Payton is a player that should have been higher long ago. He is now No. 27 in the class and one of the top guards in the state that I expect to move up even more. He is a lights out shooter that can open things up with his shooting. He affects the game offensively and is a playmaker that opens things up for others. He also goes after the defender and will be counted on for spacing. Regis is a loaded team with weapons each way and with Payton being one of the state’s best shooters they will be that much more dangerous.
Jahuale Veazy – Lincoln
Veazy is the No. 30 player in the class after being an unknown and unranked player. Jahuale was a player that was on JV and worked his way up all by putting in the time. He is quick, he is a leader and will be the pure point guard on the team this year. His numbers won’t reflect his impact but he will have one of the most important jobs in the state as he will have to mesh and keep a very talented team under control. He will have to set the pace and have the task of making sure that every player is happy and I expect him to be a standout that could push for top assist-man in all of the Denver Prep League.
