Prospect Spotlight: Levi Dombro (2019)
The first tournament of an AAU season can be a feeling-out period, as new teammates and coaches work to build a rhythm at the beginning of a season.
One of the key tasks for a team in the early stages: identifying your go-to players — your alpha dogs who are willing to take the big shots in the clutch and carry a team when the game is in the line.
It’s safe to say the Colorado Chaos 16U Elite squad accomplished that goal during the Prep Hoops Spring Kick Off last weekend. Levi Dombro, the 2019 guard in his first season with the program, made clear what the Chaos had in him: a sharpshooting lead guard who can get hot in a hurry and deliver in crunchtime.
Dombro, a 6-foot guard who run the point or play off the ball, scored 27 points in the first game of the tournament for Chaos and went on to earn second team honors on the 16U All-Tournament Team.
Dombro, who came off the bench last season with the Colorado Hawks, said he is excited to be a featured weapon for a team.
“It’s a really good feeling,” said Dombro, who is wrapping up his sophomore year at Grandview. “I really like the coaches and the players. I feel like I have a lot of confidence in me. I’m translating that to play with confidence, and it’s really helping me out.”
During his 27-point game, Dombro caught fire from beyond the arc. He’s got a smooth, quick release. He can pull up quick in transition and is also able to create is own shot off the dribble. When defenders close out on him too hard, Dombro has a quick first step that allows him to get downhill.
“I work a lot on my jump shot,” he said. “Every jump shot I take, I believe I’m going to make it. I just try to shoot with that confidence. When I get things rolling, I just try to keep shooting it.”
Dombro is still under the radar. After playing at Regis Jesuit as a freshman, he transferred to Grandview and played only two varsity games as a sophomore. That will make this spring and summer with Chaos a big opportunity to let coaches see the vast improvements he’s made to his game.
“I like to make plays and I like to be unselfish,” Dombro said. “I don’t care if it’s making plays for someone else or for me. I just like to do whatever my team needs me to do to win.”
Right now, Chaos needs him to keep shooting.
