Class of 2018 Rankings: Breaking Down The Bigs (Part II)
In the second installment of our breakdown examining Colorado’s top big men in the 2018 class, we have a number of players who have made some noise over the past year.
Let’s get right to it:
Dawson Carper, 6-11, No. 38, Rampart/Oklahoma Run PWP
Carper bounced back from an injury that cost him much of his sophomore season to have a big junior season for the Rams. He averaged 15.9 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. Carper is not super athletic, but he’s made big strides with his post footwork and continues to enhance his understanding of the game. As he continues to work on his body to help build some explosiveness, Carper could have a high ceiling left.
Ryan Ongala, 6-6, No. 51, Rangeview/Colorado Miners
Ongala had a big tournament at last year’s Spring Kick Off, and he should be poised for a big spring and summer as the lead big man for the Miners. Toughness is one of the key strengths for Ongala, who averaged roughly 10 points and seven rebounds per game in his first season of significant varsity action at Rangeview. He really battles around the rim and isn’t afraid to throw his weight around.
Charles Dinegar, 6-5, No. 63, D’Evelyn/Colorado Chaos
Dinegar is unique in his ability to be a facilitator. He has strong vision, even while playing with his back to the basket. He’s also a strong passer who has a good feel for spacing and leading teammates. Has a smooth jump shot that can extend out to the 3-point line. And though he doesn’t play above the rim, Dinegar is a good position defender in the post.
Kyrele Benford, 6-5, No. 64, Doherty/Colorado Chaos
Benford’s game is rooted in good athleticism. He runs the floor well and can finish lob plays at the rim. Defensively, he plays with a good motor and his length gives him the ability to be a rim protector. Benford is still growing into his game, but he certainly has an intriguing skill set that would portend a high ceiling.
