Today, we unveil our look at 2018 forwards who have risen their games this year.
Here are five:
Zach Hidalgo, 6-5, Frontier Academy
Hidalgo has already recorded two double-doubles and has narrowly missed two more this season. He’s averaged 18.9 points and 8.3 rebounds while leading Frontier Academy to a 5-2 start, which helped them crack the top 10 in our 3A rankings earlier this season. Hidalgo, who has played some of his grassroots basketball with the Colorado Hawks, is a highly athletic player who can routinely finish above the rim. He’s been one of the best players in 3A this season and is demonstrating himself as a player who can succeed at the next level.
Brock Lane, 6-4, Strasburg
The three-sport standout has been a monster in the paint for the Indians this season. Lane is averaging 16.8 points and 15.2 rebounds during Strasburg’s 4-1 start. And don’t think these are simply small-school stats. Lane held his own against bigger players from bigger classifications during the Prep Hoops Top 250 Expo last fall. He’s got a game that translates.
Kam Vincel, 6-3, Prairie View
Vincel has five double-doubles this season, putting him among the state’s leaders. His play inside has been a huge factor in a 5-2 start for the Thunderhawks. Overall, Vincel is averaging 16.1 points and 11.4 rebounds per game. He has a strong motor and good finishing touch.
Charles Dinegar, 6-5, D’Evelyn
D’Evelyn has been one of the most surprising teams in 4A, and Dinegar is a major part of the reason. The 6-5, 200-pound forward has been a bruising presence in the paint for the Jaguars. Averaging 15.4 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.7 blocks, with an ability to score inside and out, Dinegar has proven to be a player who can affect the game in multiple ways.
Courtney Dean, 6-4, Denver South
The scoring from the athletic small forward for the Rebels has taken a jump from 8.1 points per game last season to 11.9 through seven games this season. Dean is among the most athletic, high-leaping players in his class, but what we saw of him early this season in a win over Sierra suggests he has greatly refined the finer skills in his game. Credit that to an impressive summer with Billups Elite — as well as a larger responsibility under coach Malik Fletcher as he helps take over a bigger role following the graduation of standout forward Chudier Bile.
