The wrap covered a blister that had been developed while diving on the floor during practice earlier in the week. But the bandage had no shot at slowing him down.
Brimble, a 5-11 senior guard, scored a career-high 37 points and hit eight 3-pointers in a 77-50 victory. He scored 25 points in the first half on 7-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc. It was the best performance in what has been a fantastic start to Brimble’s senior season.
While guiding the talented Spartans to a 5-1 record (through Thursday), Brimble is averaging 25.3 points per game. He’s shooting 53 percent (32-of-60) from 3-point range.
In short, Brimble has embraced being “the guy” for a team with big aspirations.
“This is the first year that he’s been here that it’s been up to him to take the shots,” Doherty coach Jarris Krapcha said. “Last year we had Dalven (Brushier, now at Salt Lake Community College). The year before that, we had a couple other kids. My challenge to him was to be aggressive offensively. We don’t want him passing up any kind of open look. So far he’s done that. He’s accepted that very well.”
While Brimble has assumed more of the scoring role for Doherty, it hasn’t changed his effectiveness as a point guard. He pushes the pace, keeps the ball moving and works well off the ball. He has an extremely high court IQ and knows how to get guys in the right spots.
Brimble also credits the improvement of his bigs for helping him find more ways to orchestrate offense.
“This summer, every single day we were just working in the gym,” Brimble said. “We’ve been working hard, just going against each other. It’s really paying off.”
Colorado Mesa was on hand for Brimble’s offensive explosion against ThunderRidge. An offer from its staff could come shortly. Brimble and his coach are both convinced the point guard could be an impact player at the Division II RMAC level.
If he continues to make shots like he has this season, there’s certainly no doubt about that.
