You can’t let them see you sweat.
Perhaps that explains why Helbig, whose older brother Chris was one of the best athletes ever produced by Holy Family, has showed such poise and levelheadedness with his sophomore season underway for a team that looks like it can compete deep into the Class 4A playoffs.
The 6-3 Helbig entered Tuesday’s game against Sierra — which Holy Family won to improve to 4-1 — averaging 9.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game, while displaying versatility on defense that allows him to guard multiple positions on the floor.
“He’s good and has a lot of potential,” senior teammate Joe Golter says of Helbig. “He’s one of our best players.”
Helbig attributes much of his growth as a basketball player to his older brother, who now plays football at the University of Colorado, as well as his older sister.
“It’s just being around the game a lot, playing with Chris in the backyard and my sister,” Helbig said. “It got me to that level.”
There is still growth to be done for Helbig, both physically and in a basketball sense. Keeping his motor churning every play has been a point of emphasis. But Helbig has already shown an ability to step up in big moments.
In a huge early season win over Golden 11 days ago, Helbig had two beautiful fourth-quarter passes under pressure that led to layups that led to two big buckets in Holy Family’s 60-53 victory. On a night when he went 2-of-7 from the floor on his way to 10 points, Helbig had shown he could impact the game in other ways.
Time will tell how much further Helbig’s game will develop, but he has the size and skill set to reach the Division II level as a basketball player with continued growth.
As Holy Family continues to surge toward the top of the 4A rankings, its 6-3 sophomore will be a player to watch.
