Ari Rosenfeld | Prep Hoops Scout
Leading Roman to a 10-3 league record, Jackson consistently lived up to his billing as the top senior in the state. He thrived both on and off the ball, being used as both a point forward and wing scorer. A cerebral facilitator by nature, he was still able to show that side of his game but was forced to take on more of a scoring burden for the first time, answering the bell to the tune of 22 points per game within the league. Jackson showed added creativity off the bounce with enhanced versatility to his perimeter jumper, making him a pretty tough cover when combined with his size and passing chops. He should be an instant impact piece at VCU with a chance to one day play at the highest levels.

Jackson has had some explosive scoring performances so far this season, but more so picked his spots in this one while still finishing with a team-high 17 points. The highly-touted swingman came out looking to facilitate, using his size to see over the defense playing off of ball screens and make reads over the top. He showed renewed aggressiveness as a scorer in the second half, reeling off 11 third quarter points highlighted by a pair of dunks in the open floor and tough shots from beyond the arc, respectively.

Jackson has done nothing so far this season but strengthen his hold on his statewide #1 ranking and that continued on Friday with a smooth 17-point performance. The VCU pledge is playing with his typical calm and cerebral approach but with a clearly enhanced level of confidence, particularly when it comes to his scoring and shotmaking. He knocked down a pair of 3s on Friday along with multiple high-level turnarounds over smaller defenders. In the 4th quarter with the game on the line, he shifted into playmaking mode, using his size to see over the defense for a trio of assists leading to 8 points that helped to ice the game. It wasn’t Jackson’s most explosive game but still offered a lens into what makes him so highly-regarded with all he can do on the floor.

Jackson continues to develop and get better with time. The VCU commit showed he is taking a bigger leadership role this season and has no problem scoring, facilitating, rebounding. He is blossoming into being dude at the high school level. Jackson finished with a team high 21 points and had four three-point field goal attempts. I like how he was also able to be an unselfish teammate and find others for scoring chances of their own.

Jackson plays with a smooth, controlled pace that keeps the offense organized and balanced. He’s a confident shot maker who can score from multiple levels when the defense gives him space. His ability to facilitate stands out, consistently finding teammates in rhythm and making the right reads. Jackson’s positional size is a major advantage, allowing him to see over the defense and anticipate openings. He uses that size well to deliver passes out of pressure and over the top. He rarely looks rushed, even when the game speeds up around him. Overall, his poise and skill set make him a steady presence at the lead guard spot.

The VCU pledge had a decorated season last year taking his team all the way to the state finals. He was a member of the second team last season but I think due to a few losses of a few players on his Roman Catholic team he will take a jump as a scorer and take on a bigger offensive role. First year head coach Brad Wanamaker will rely heavy on Jackson’s leadership and experience in his rookie campaign as a high school head coach.

-The VCU commit looked really good at both ends of the floor in this one. Jackson has added a bit of muscle to allow him to bounce defenders off of him on drives to the rim to use his size to finish in the paint. He showed the full range of offensive skills– he hit a 3 off the dribble, had a steal and a dunk, had a beautiful step-through pivot between two defenders to score around the basket, and worked his way to the free throw line. Thought he did a great job defensively on an elite prospect in Hiller to showcase his defensive upside at the next level as a wing that can be tasked with guarding 1-3 in the A10.
