Maybe the biggest transfer splash in the area came in the form of Smith, a senior lead guard who had compiled quite the resumé through three years as a key contributor at Imhotep. Looking to challenge himself further in the PCL, Smith consistently ran the show for Roman and positioned the Cahillites for a run at league and state championships. He’s a dynamic threat off the dribble with his ability to leave opponents in the dust getting downhill or stretch things out beyond the arc as a pullup shooter. On the other end, Smith is a constant pest with his ball pressure at the point of attack. The floor general projects as a focal point of the La Salle program moving forward as the first recruit in Darris Nichols’ first full recruiting class.

The general who took his talents to Broad and Vine looks to add a catholic league championship to his decorated high school career before he heads up to 21st and Olney. Smith was a first team all state member last season when he was at Imhotep. Smith has been a member of two state championship teams during his high school career. Smith averaged 16 ppg as a junior.

-Didn’t love how he started the game defensively but Smith rallied well in the 2H to lead his team to victory. The full offensive arsenal was on display for the La Salle commit: pull up 3, spin move floater off glass AND1, floater off the window past the double, one leg floater, double cross elbow pull, double cross and turned the corner for the extension lay. Smith uses a tight handle to maneuver his way to spots in the halfcourt and I thought his ability to work his way to the FT line when the offense stalled was key to his team’s comeback. His spin move pull up has to be one of the more unguardable shots in Philly basketball, as he used a few makes to then blow by his matchup off the spin move to get to the paint in the 2H.

While speculation had been mounting about Foster and Sutton’s decisions to leave the area, the most shocking offseason development of the area so far came in the form of Smith’s decision to leave Public League flag-bearer Imhotep for fabled Roman Catholic. A vintage Philly floor general who recently announced his intentions to stay home and commit to La Salle, Smith has been among the best high school players in the city over the past couple years, really coming into his own as a junior following the departure of top-50 guard Ahmad Nowell to UConn (now VCU). Coming off three consecutive Public League titles and a loss in the state semifinals, he’ll now run the show for Roman as the Cahillites seek out their third PCL crown in four years.

On Monday night, Smith was absolutely cooking defenders off the dribble. He used a variety of change of direction moves to get into the painted rea for lay-ins and floaters. He finished several of his attacks on the rim with beautiful kisses of the glass. Additionally, Smith used his deep bag off moves to set up step-backs and fade aways in the mid-range as well as from behind the arc. Of course, Smith also generated points in the open court. His menacing on-ball defense produced most of those fast break opportunities. When the final horn sounded, Smith had assembled an explosive 40-point (4 triples) performance.

I am not sure if Smith is still angry aboutImhotep’s semifinal loss in the 6A state tournament or if he was just in the zone for his opener at the Donofrio. Whichever the case, on Tuesday night, Smith was played like a man possessed. This dynamic guard scored in every way imaginable but was especially unstoppable when producing points off the dribble. His ability to hit floaters, pull ups or spinning fade-aways was jaw dropping. Smith also showcased the ability to rapidly go coast to coast for a lay-in or to drop a dime on a teammate. After his runs at the Donofrio conclude, we expect that Smith will absolutely destroy the competition on the grassroots circuit.
