Expert Analysis
Eric Wallace | Prep Hoops Scout
One of the nation’s top big men, Ekezie Jr. is a mobile frontcourt prospect with excellent length and athleticism. He impacts the game defensively with his rebounding and ability to alter and block shots, while continuing to develop on the offensive end. As his production grows, his upside becomes even more evident. The son of a former NBA player, he possesses the tools to be a prospect at the highest level.

Arguably the most dominant physical force in all of high school basketball right now, Ekezie Jr is the son of a NBA center who looks like somebody who could be placed into a high major game tomorrow and compete physically. A walking double-double, Ekezie Jr is tough to keep off the glass and has the size and length to be an impactful shot blocker. Still needing some time as a scorer to develop, I’m hoping to see Ekezie Jr show some strides as a back to the basket player, a play finisher and a floor spacer from the mid-range area this summer. A reclass up to 2026 is also a potential option for Ekezie Jr.

Considered perhaps the top post prospect in the national junior class, Ekezie was a force in the paint from the opening tip to help Southeastern cruise past West Oaks. The 7-footer nearly reached double-figure rebounds before halftime on his way to a 15-point double-double. He was consistent in his ability to establish inside position and grab whatever hit his hands at the highest point. His offense came mostly by way of dumpoffs but he also hit a smooth jump hook through contact, cashed in consistently at the foul line, and flashed his shooting touch out to the 3-point line. Ekezie’s role is limited with Southeastern’s cadre of talent alongside him but his ability to thrive as a rim-runner and paint protector have him being recruited at the highest levels of the sport.

When Obinna Ekezie Jr’s motor is running the way it did in Southeastern Prep’s semi-final win over IMG Academy, there aren’t really any players in America I’d want over him. His ability to completely control the flow of the game as a big with his defense at the rim was special. He finished with 18 Points and 4 Rebounds on 8-10 from the floor. They only have him listed with one block but he definitely altered at least a dozen shots at the rim, anchoring the Southeastern Prep defense at an elite level. Ekezie has shown the ability to hit the trail three as well, showing the outside touch in his game. For him having a really high level motor consistently is the biggest thing to ensure he maintains his status at the top of the class because when he is really going like he was on this night, it was insane to see.

A teammate of Rosser’s this season, Ekezie is arguably the most dominant interior presence in the 2027 class nationally. Ekezie Jr’s dad played in the NBA and physically Ekezie Jr looks capable of playing at that level as well. Making progress as an offensive player for Vegas Elite, being able to finish lobs and catch and finish in traffic are key skills for Ekezie to consistently show this winter.

One of the top prospects in the country, Ekezie was a Louisville native who moved to Prolific Prep last season before making the switch to Southeastern Prep for his junior season. Ekezie is one of the most dominant physical forces in the country with elite production in the paint on both ends of the court. Expect blue blood programs to be involved in Ekezie’s recruitment with Kentucky, Louisville and Ohio State among the early schools mentioned.
