Expert Analysis
Tom Keller | Prep Hoops Scout
Harken was a difference maker for his Iverson squad. He banged in a bunch of three pointers and is deadly if he is given any space from behind the arc. Harken plays a physical brand of basketball and plays with an aggressive motor. He also found ways to connect with others for scoring chances with his passing. Harken lived at the foul line and was perfect from there. Liked his timing to get steals and assists. Harken is very steady and should see a ton of low to mid division ones monitoring him.

Having recently surpassed the 1,000-point plateau for his career, Harken has been a fixture of the Malvern program since his first day on campus and took yet another step forward this season as a two-way Swiss army knife. Harken makes for a unique blend with the physical tools of a wing guard, the skillset of a mismatch forward, and the mind of a lead initiator all coalescing into one hell of a tough cover at the high school level. He plays with a chip on his shoulder and a nose for the ball that leads to routine double-figure rebound performances, and puts constant pressure on the rim to the tune of nearly 20 points per game. He’ll likely need to make continued strides as a shooter to lock himself into D1 recruitment but has proven himself as an unquestioned winner and clear scholarship-level talent.

Coming off just recently scoring his 1,000th career point, Harken showed no signs of slowing down with a workmanlike 24-point effort. Against a Penn Charter team lacking in terms of physical strength, the junior swingman consistently put on his hard hat and went to work near the basket, getting there in any way imaginable and converting efficiently in traffic. As usual, he was effective in the floor game as well, hauling in rebounds from the backcourt to help create extra possessions or kickstart the transition attack going the other way. Harken is heavily on the radar of high-academic scholarship-level programs and his performance offered a clear window as to why.

Harken is truly a positionless player at the high school level, with the frame, ball skills and playmaking IQ of a guard but the strength and interior toughness to contend with most forwards and bigs. He showed his versatility in two wins on Saturday, thriving as he typically does by attacking the rim with fervor and scoring opportunistically off cuts and offensive rebounds. Looking to the next level, Harken showed notable progress as a jump shooter in a win over Linden (NJ), knocking down a trio of shots from beyond the arc with increased confidence and fluidity to his stroke. That development will be the key piece to monitor as it makes Harken a cleaner fit as a nominal guard at the D1 level, which his frame is likely to necessitate on the defensive end.

This past weekend Harken turned heads at the Mid-Atlantic ISTC after he averaged 17 points per contest. In addition to being a major scoring threat, this stretch-4 prospect is a heads-up passer, strong rebounder and plus defender. Harken has recently heard from a slew of schools including Cornell, Bucknell, Penn and Stanford.

At the circuit level, AAU generally offers a key look at players who are the go-to guys for their high school teams having to adapt to different roles alongside other talent, oftentimes a more representative sample for their roles at the next level. Some players wilt under the change in scenery, but Harken shows a consistent ability to excel. Operating primarily with the ball in his hands as the go-to scorer at Malvern, he adapted seamlessly to a glue-guy role in his spring debut alongside a collection of high-major prospects with Team Final . Accustomed to having the ball in his hands, instead he shined as a cutter, transition scorer, and spotup shooter while playing tough-nosed positional defense. His ability to produce efficiently across roles and situations should make Harken a priority among academic D1 programs over the next couple years.

Harken has played spectacular ball at this year’s Donofrio Classic and the 1st Team All-Tournament nod he received was well deserved. This week, the stretch-4 prospect with a gritty edge posted games of 24 points and 6 rebounds as well as 23 points and 7 rebounds. Harken popped threes and mid-range jumpers. He also hit a few runners and worked the offensive glass for buckets. Harken’s end-to-end speed is underrated. He scored several buckets by filling a lane in transition and then beating his man down court for lay-in. His ability to convert through fouls or finish with a creative touch was impressive.

Harken put on a dominating performance at the Donofrio Classic as he registered 28 pointsand grabbed 10 rebounds (unofficially). After his stellar sophomore campaign at Malvern Prep, that impressive stat line should not come as a shock. Harken is a stretch-4 prospect who drained two triples, scored in the mid-range and via the fast break. He also displayed the ability to muscle his way past smaller defenders on straight line drives as well as dives to rim. His ability to convert through contact was impressive. Harken’s length and positioning skills enabled him gobble up rebounds.

One of two freshman starters in the Malvern backcourt last year, Harken was thrown into the fire immediately and it paid dividends with a breakout year as a sophomore. A regular threat for 20+ points, he shows versatile scoring ability but also a consistent impact across the floor game. He’s methodical using his footwork and strong frame to work his way to the rim, with a steadily improving ability to space the floor out to 3. Harken is also an outstanding off-ball cutter with strength and athleticism to finish in traffic. He figures to be a popular name among high-academic D1 programs in the coming years.

Harken’s stellar sophomore campaign has been well chronicled on this site. This stretch-4 prospect has developed into the No. 1 option at Malvern Prep and is averaging 19 points per night. Recently Harken exploded for 29 points (3 threes) in a win over Pennington School (NJ). In early January Harken splashed 4 triples on his way to 26 points as MP defeated Delaware powerhouse Salesianum. Harken’s accurate thee-point shooting is complimented nicely by mid-range game as well as ability to overpower smaller defenders in the paint. Plus, Harken owns the speed, athleticism and finishing skills to produce points in transition.
