Sam Duren | Prep Hoops Scout
Early standout for the Tigers. Showed his next level level athleticism by getting loose for a transition dunk and was picking up on defense as usual. Where he really impressed was his continual improvement as a creator. Plays direct and to the point as a driver. Quick and strong downhill drives, hard to keep out of the lane. Once there he makes the right passes, leading to assists and hockey assists. Gives the Tigers a second dangerous creator. Which will be pay off throughout the season as they chase another State Tournament appearance.

An athletic and disruptive guard. The Independence Community College commitment is a ballhawk on the defensive end. Quickly turning defense into exciting offense for himself and teammates. Type of guard who’s impact on a game goes well beyond the box score.

While a lot of prospect are celebrating new offers, the Norman Tiger spent July 4th celebrating his commitment. Combs-Pierce committed to Kansas JuCo, Independence Community College. He’s an athletic guard, who especially shines on the defensive end. While this spring and summer has shown more of his PG and lead guard skills in grassroots play. Indy should be the perfect spot for his game to continue to grow. As his older brother, Trashuan, has shined in Indy and is currently earning an extensive offer list before his sophomore year.

It’s clear after watching on Saturday that Combs-Pierce’s ability on the ball has been undervalued. Was at the controls for Chaos, and he played with poise. Great first step, but capable of switching gears and slowing down. Had moments of outstanding misdirection with his eyes. An example came in a pick and roll situation. He focused on an open shooter which froze the help defender for a split second, leading to a no look pass to the roller for an easy two points. Along with the vision and creation, has hesitation and other moves to create lanes for his self. But in this viewing he left a few points at the rim, with great moves but not finishing. Including one where he should’ve just dunked it.
To go along with the impressive growth on the ball, Combs-Pierce continues to always make at least one “wow” play a game on defense. From chase down blocks to amazing anticipation in passing lanes. His athleticism also helps him out on the glass strongly for a guard. As his senior year approaches, the Norman Tiger is becoming an even more well rounded, two way impact player.

Defense has been Combs-Pierce calling card at the high school level. He’s explosive, with awesome anticipatory skills for steals and even rising up for blocks. With Norman, he’s an efficient offensive player. Highlight reel plays in transition, knocking down open threes and often making the right decision as a passer. AAU ball can provide players with different opportunities and Combs-Pierce has recieved more time on the ball. Showing off that he has the handles and feel to pair well with his next level athletic ability. With an athletic family background, it shouldn’t be a shock that the Norman Tiger should continue to ascend.

Combs-Pierce is a dynamic guard, who even when not scoring can leave a mark on the game. For his size he’s strong and has plus athleticism to match. Seems to be making strides as a passer, capable of making good passes with either hand. Either driving and creating for others or playing with his head up in transition and making the smart pass. Plays with good intensity, feet movement and off the ball awareness on defense, solid all around showing for a junior that has the tools to make a leap this year.

A very impressive steal and score to end the third quarter, set the tone for the Tigers to put away the Patriots. Like his older brother, Combs-Pierce is a smart and heady defender. Who’s often very successful with his gambles and reading of the game. Throughout the final frame, the quick and compact guard made big play after big play leading to transition points for himself and his teammates. He was fearless on one drive late, where he went through Putnam City West’s star forward, finished through the contact and fouled the Patriots’ best player out the game.

A Swiss Army Knife guard, he’s been impressive in many viewings of Norman this year. It starts on the defensive end, where he’s strong on the ball and active off the ball with good instincts. The same compact and strong frame also allows him to be a good finisher in transition but he’s unselfish with the transition and driving opportunities he does create. Combs-Pierce is just as likely to hand out a nifty dime to a teammate, as he is to try muscle his way through contact. The sophomore has an outstanding base, and likely will soon add more explosiveness to his already crafty finishing ability around the basket.

The sophomore was a sparkplug off the bench, with a controlled game for a younger player. When called upon to hit open threes, he buried them on the night. He looked to push in transition or off rebounds, often being rewarded with transition points (including punching a slam on the break), and in general played an efficient brand of basketball. One instance of great hustle came when be blocked a shot on the perimeter, dove into the bench to save the loose ball, which led to a transition opportunity for his teammates. Versatile and efficient on the night, the younger Combs-Pierce is a sophomore to keep tabs on.
