Ari Rosenfeld | Prep Hoops Scout
The top performer of the night, Newson exploded for nearly 40 points while putting on an aerial assault with his above-the-rim exploits. The Delaware native took advantage of the up-and-down style of play, consistently attacking the basket both off the dribble and as a cutter, whether in the halfcourt or especially in transition. He authored arguably the highlight of the tournament so far with an explosive poster dunk in the second half while also showing his ability to use his length to contort around defenders and finish in traffic. As he continues refining his ball skills and decisionmaking, the ceiling becomes more and more in sight for the dynamic two-way athlete.

With Neumann struggling mightily for much of the game offensively, Newson did all he could to keep the Saints within striking distance. The athletic junior swingman scored a game-high 19 points, all but one coming in the first three quarters before ceding to his seniors for the final frame as he battled foul trouble. He spaced the floor with Neumann’s only two 3s before the closing minutes but was most impressive while showcasing his twitchiness and fluidity on a number of decisive drives to the rim. His length and athleticism also helped the Saints contend with a bigger Judge lineup both defensively and on the glass. Newson continues to track as a potential high-major option moving into a key spring and summer on the grassroots circuit.

Making his Palestra debut in his first year in the PCL, Newson had no issue getting acclimated as he put together a 19-point effort to lead the win. Newson scored 15 of his points after halftime on perfect 7-for-7 shooting as the Saints came from behind to seize momentum. He did knock down a 3 but was mostly effective using his length and quick-twitch athleticism to make plays near the rim, whether as a slasher off the bounce or seizing on scrap points as a cutter and crasher. The junior swingman was also important on the other end, drawing the matchup of league MVP

and making him work hard through an uncharacteristically inefficient outing. It was a high-level overall performance that showed why Newson is on high-major radars already.

Making the move from Academy of the New Church (PA) of the Friends League, Newson made the transition look seamless while putting together a second team All-Catholic campaign. The rangy wing guard fit in perfectly to a high-octane, guard-heavy Saints rotation. His size, length, and athleticism allowed him to contribute consistently on the boards and as a versatile defensive presence. Offensively, he used his blistering first step to get downhill routinely and continued to make strides as a consistent jump shooter as well. Newson should continue to be on high-major radars heading into the spring and summer.

Holding down a spot in the top 3, Newson has made a seamless transition to the Catholic League while helping Neumann to a 6-1 start in league play. The biggest and most athletic member of a deep rotation of scholarship-level guards at the Saints’ disposal, Newson has thrived doing the dirty work while still managing to be a consistently dynamic scoring threat. A transfer from Academy of the New Church, he’s shown he can pick his spots and utilize his burst and blossoming ball skills to attack the rim in the flow of the offense. Newson has also shown continued growth as a perimeter shooter, all while having to guard bigger players on most nights and racking up deflections to kickstart the Saints’ transition attack. He continues to be monitored closely by programs up to the high-major level and is in the conversation for the #1 spot in the state.

28p 7r 1s 1b vs Carroll
-Probably the most well-rounded performance that I’ve seen out of Newson as a versatile guard prospect that excelled at both ends of the floor. Offensively we got to see the full array of skills on C2C drives off of defensive rebounds, drive and kicks, and turnaround baseline Js. But I thought that his biggest contributions were at the defensive end of the floor. Newson genuinely guarded 2-5 on the day and did well on switches on the perimeter while also pushing Carroll’s bigs off their spot on the low block. His best stretch game on a steal and C2C double clutch lay through the contact (completed the three point play at the FT line) followed by blocking a big at the rim before taking it C2C again for the inside hand finish through the foul. How dynamic of an athlete he is should really flip some games for NG this season.

Newson is a natural scorer with good size as the two guard spot. Newson does a great job of creating offense. He has a handful of mid major and high major offers already. Him being at Neumann adds another prolific scorer to their roster. He spent last season in the Friends School League at Academy of The New Church.

A talented two-way wing, few players can match Newson’s athleticism and defensive impact. A terror in transition, Newson can fly through the air and finish above the rim with power as an explosive one foot jumper. Continuing to develop as an offensive player in the half-court, Newson has all the skills to become a consensus top 100 prospect when it’s all said and done. Arizona State, Virginia Tech, Penn State, St Joes and La Salle have all already offered Newson.

Marquis Newson had a great game for Neumann Goretti against Clinton Grace. Marquis is an elite two-guard who has a complete scoring game. He’s a ridiculous athlete, and you see that when he gets to the rim. He is reliable as a spot-up shooter and has nice size for a guard or a wing. Marquis has sky-high potential, and he is someone who if he puts it together, can make a Power 5 impact. He had 20 points and 9 rebounds in a loss to Clinton Grace.

-Newson turns corners and gets downhill quicker than any player that I’ve seen at his size this year. A dynamic athlete that uses long strides and an advanced bag of pivot moves around the basket, he had the most success against a pretty stacked Clinton Grace team that had several athletes to match up with him. His activity on the glass from the guard spot should continue to translate to the next level but I want to see his decision-making in tight spaces continue to improve to take advantage of the afore-mentioned athletic gifts.
