Making a surprise return from injury, Ashley-Wright was still showing signs of rust but nonetheless provided a key spark off the bench that helped swing the game in Neumann’s favor. The Towson commit came into the game immediately in attack mode, using his slick handle and dynamic end-to-end speed to put constant pressure on the paint, particularly in transition. He was consistently able to draw contact and get to the line, which was particularly necessary with the Saints starved for offense through much of the first half. He’ll need to reign things in a bit looking toward the next level, but his change-of-pace attack was precisely what the Saints ordered on Wednesday to come away with the win.

Wright has been a mainstay in the Neumann backcourt for years and has made his name as lightning quick scorer who lives in the paint. He was the player of the year last season in 5A last season. I expect him to have a similar type of season as he and his Neumann-Goretti team look to repeat as defending state champions. Wright committed to Towson in July.

Ashley-Wright proved again on Saturday that he is one of the most well-rounded guards in the state. His end-to-end speed and slick handles produced numerous transition buckets. That speed combined with his dribble moves also enabled Ashley-Wright to get to the rack in the half-court. Plus, Ashley-Wright’s jumper was automatic from behind the arc and in the mid-range. He totaled 19 points against Sidwell Friends (Wash., DC) and picked up an offer from Manhattan too.

-Spent the afternoon slicing through the Panthers’ defense to create advantage opportunities for his team in a big win. His back foot burst has improved to give him a nice boost when attacking the basket off the bounce to make plays for himself and others. The handle has improved to allow him to play-make with his head up, seeing double teams before they arrive and reading the backside of the defense well to make the right play. Loved the balance on a stop n pop short jumper in transition to push the lead to double digits under 3 mins.

Playing back in his home state and with his brother in the opposing backcourt, Ashley-Wright was clearly out to make a statement on Monday night. He did just that, pouring in over 20 points while showcasing his energetic brand of two-way playmaking. “Munchie”, as he’s known, came out aggressive with a series of streaking finishes in the open floor before slowing things down later in the game to highlight his ability as a shot-maker from deep both off the dribble and the catch. Ashley-Wright also impressed using his speed and instincts to get his hands in the way defensively and spark transition opportunities going the other way. Dynamic outings like Monday night’s make it easy to see why he has a host of D1 programs involved in his recruitment.

On the spring grassroots circuit “Munchie” has been torching opponents with his blazing speed and filthy handles that allow him to get to the rim whenever he wants. Ashley-Wright will also get paint touches and then distribute to the dunker spot or perimeter shooters. Ashley-Wright’s outstanding play on this spring has generated interest from a slew of mid-major programs including UMass, Lehigh, Marist, and Drexel.

Continuing to get his feet wet with a new team, Ashley-Wright looks to be getting fully comfortable if his play on Saturday was any indication. Despite a tight overtime loss, “Munchie” was his typical dynamic self squaring off with his high school teammate in Yates, consistently working his way into the paint to kickstart the K-Low offense. If not finishing for himself, he was fairly consistent in making the proper drive-and-kick reads to lead to open looks for teammates. And with the game on the line, it was Ashley-Wright with the ball in his hands in the final minutes as K-Low pushed its way back from a deficit to force overtime. Coming off a strong season of growth, he should garner D1 attention this summer with his energizing play off the dribble.

On Friday Ashley-Wright continued to prove he is one of the fastest primary ball handlers in the region and that he can score at all three-levels. He posted 12 points in this game, but it was his court vision, passing and basketball IQ that really impressed. College coaches will love his is patience and willingness to make the extra pass.
