About Mario
Expert Analysis

Maybe the surprise player of the entire 16U field at the Cream City Collision, Romo was nothing short of stellar for All-Wisconsin versus a big and talented lineup from Team Herro . The skilled, bouncy wing with impressive length finished with 13 points and scored around the over bigger defenders with his quickness off the bounce and his elevation toward the basket. He also drew plenty of fouls and swished five of his six foul shots. Romo led North Fond du Lac in virtually every category last season as he contributed 17.5 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 2.4 apg, 2.3 spg and 1.5 bspg. A player to watch as he matures and add strength to his frame, Romo’s showing against highly regarded Team Herro was definitely impressive.

Mario is a Swiss Army Knife type of player for All Wisconsin. He can run the point at times, he’s dangerous in transition, he can catch at the high post and distribute to cutting teammates, or he can knock down the open jumper. At 6’4 he has good positional size out on the wing, and he used that length to come up with a couple of blocked shots around the rim. In the second half Marion picked up a steal at the top of the key, and went all the way for an and-one dunk on the other end. He’s been really productive any time I watch All Wisconsin this spring.

Mario showcased a versatile game for All Wisconsin 16u at 6’4. He was smooth attacking off the dribble, able to beat defenders in isolation while rarely looking sped up. Can play off two feet which allowed him to take advantage of his 6’4 frame to finish through some contact. As the game progressed he started to showcase more of his perimeter skillset, knocking down a number of pull-up jumpers including a three at the half-time buzzer. Defensively he guarded just about every spot on the floor, and had three blocked shots in the first half alone.

Mario put in a dominant performance in the game I watched. At 6’3 he can either play out on the wing, or as a bit of an undersized 4 as he’s a very physical player. Mario hit a mid-range jumper for his first bucket of the game, added in a turnaround jumper, and got to the rack for a handful of other finishes throughout the afternoon. He has the footwork to play off two feet and create angles to finish, or can simply body defenders out of the way and explode up to score.

Good size and length from Romo Jr. allow him to be a versatile player. He’s great in and around the paint and gets downhill easily. He’s a crafty finisher and a willing passer. Romo Jr. plays with good speed and shoots it with nice rhythm. Even as a wing, he’s responsible for a good share of the lead guard role for his team and does so successfully thanks to the poise and awareness he has. Romo Jr. has a smooth game and a lot of skill.

Romo spent his summer months honing his skills. He began his high school career at North Fond Du Lac. During camp he was on a mission to fill the lanes and space the floor. He operated out of the wing and corner area at a high level. He knocked down a great deal of corner threes. His floaters and layups were also on display when being run off the line.
