About Malaki

How would you briefly describe your gameplay style?

I'm a team first player and focus on being solid in every area on the court: shooting, passing, rebounding, defense, etc. I love to get out and run and push the ball with good ball movement to get open looks. As an elite shooter I work hard to spread the floor and can knock down shots from anywhere on the court.

Can you provide a brief description of your mentality or personality?

I'm a mentally tough kid and play with a chip on my shoulder. Off the court I'm easy going and enjoy hanging out with my friends and family.

Are you involved in any clubs, organizations, or have you received any non-sport awards?

I am involved with various non-profit organizations. I volunteer at the Oregon Food Bank and the Kelly School food pantry. I also enjoy working with young children and volunteer to help run the Beaverton High School youth basketball camps. Recently I received membership in the National Honor Society and look forward to being involved with the program.

What skills or qualities have you developed, such as leadership, teamwork, or community service?

As noted above I am very involved with community service opportunities. This has helped me grow as a person and increased my knowledge and skills in teamwork and leadership. I work as the head Baseball Umpire Coordinator for our local youth baseball program as well as umpiring throughout the spring baseball season.

What type of college are you looking for?

I'm looking for a great school that can help me achieve my goals on the basketball court and in the classroom, to be a leader in the community and my future profession.

I was able to catch Malaki Ypma play last Saturday and he caught my eye with his size and perimeter shooting. He was fairly quiet in the first half, but then he really turned it on in the second half. Hitting back to back 3-pointers, and then he also added another a few minutes later. In addition to his scoring, he uses his height and length to his advantage on defense.
