Ashland is so deep and talented that it is easy to overlook a player like Justin. Probably the most explosive player on that Tomcats roster, Hughes is a good downhill driver and is a capable three point shooter. Perhaps his potential is highest on the defensive end, where Justin can switch across multiple positions and has the physical tools to be a true lock down defender.

Another sophomore who has all kinds of long term potential, Justin has the ability to score or facilitate for others and appears to be only scratching the surface of his abilities. A player who will be much better as a Senior than he is now, Hughes is a player who is likely to continue getting better and should be one of the best Sophomores in the 16th region this upcoming season and a likely scholarship level player, eventually.

Hughes could very well be the next great guard out of Ashland and he’s starting to show the sort of potential that could have D1 coaches very excited a year from now. Justin had a strong weekend scoring the ball for his Midwest MADE team and has the athleticism that next level coaches covet. Keep an eye out for a big summer from Hughes.

but the cupboard is far from bare. Hughes played a smaller role this past season for the Tomcats but should be expected for a huge boost in playing time next year. Starting this summer, don’t be surprised to start hearing his name quite frequently as a potential breakout star in the Sophomore class.

I like the prospect of Hughes due to the foundation he has. Great size for a guard, has great length, and knows how to use his skills. A lot of young players have skills but do not know how to contain them and use them right. He is a good but not great athlete but it doesn’t matter because he still gets buckets. He can get to the rim consistently and really shines in transition. Finishes in traffic well. He has a really good first step in the half-court and gets on the defender’s hip quick. He knocked down shots from deep as well. He showed great impact on the game and was all over the floor.

A fluid mover for his size, Hughes got going in transition off steals and defensive rebounds and did a nice job of pushing the pace for his team. Showing flashes as a ball handler, Hughes split the defense with his handle and could take it coast to coast himself. Also being productive off leak outs and putbacks, Hughes found simple ways to score the basketball and impact the game.

Justin is a high upside player who will get better as he gets more game reps, moving forward. Hughes has a small role on a veteran Ashland team but will be a much bigger factor for the Tomcats next season. With good size and above average athleticism, expect Justin to make a name for himself in the near future.

Hughes was a player I only got to see briefly on Saturday but he impressed me enough to want to see more in the future. Justin has good size already and flashed enough skill and athleticism that it’s easy to see why the coaches at Ashland are so excited about Hughes, long term.
