Expert Analysis

Moving into the top 5, Owens is in the midst of a really strong season for a really good Ashland team. Alijah consistently plays above the rim on offense. He has a quick first step and is excellent at getting into the paint. Once he’s in there, Owens is a good finisher and above average passer who keeps getting better and better. Long term, number 5 may be too low for him.

Alijah Owens stood out as one of the most athletic players in attendance, combining explosive leaping ability with an excellent feel for the game. His relentless motor and ability to create off the bounce made him a constant problem for defenders, showing that he can impact the game in multiple ways.

Owens is another really good point guard in this class. He’s an excellent finisher at the rim and a talented playmaker. It remains to be seen how much he plays with the ball in his hands this year because the Boyd County roster is so loaded but Alijah has a very high ceiling, long term. I’d like to see how well Owens shoots the ball but he hasn’t really had to in the times I’ve seen him play since he can get past opposing guards fairly easily. Certainly a name to keep up with this season and beyond.

Owens is one of the top freshmen in the state and looked MUCH better than he did when I saw him this summer. Alijah was likely the best player on his team even though he was also the youngest. Able to score the ball in high volumes, Owens had a very strong showing at camp and established himself as one of the top freshmen guards in a class that is LOADED with good guards.

Alijah thrives in the midrange, where his smooth scoring ability sets him apart. He has a natural feel for finding soft spots in the defense and consistently knocks down pull-ups, floaters, and tough fadeaways with confidence. Whether he’s coming off a screen or creating off the dribble, Alijah’s midrange game is polished and efficient, making him a reliable go-to option in tight situations. His patience and shot selection make him a tough cover and a key asset on the offensive end.

A recent transfer into Boyd County, Owens has a chance to see the floor early at Boyd with his scoring ability.

Owens hasn’t even started in high school yet but he’s been recognized as the top middle schooler in West Virginia. Alijah is like a lot of freshmen. He’d impress you with something then disappear the rest of the day. He’s already got good size and should keep growing. If Alijah hits his ceiling, he’ll be a top player in West Virginia for a while.
