-Loved the grit and lunch pail approach from Westervelt in a nice road win over the BCL’s leading team. Westervelt was super valuable on the glass to close possessions in the 1H (8 rebounds, 6 defensive) for the Patriots to set the tone early in a matchup between two scrappy teams. Had a great string of plays where he grabbed a tough O board in traffic and found a shooter to put John Carroll ahead by 2 baskets in the 1H, scored off a backdoor cut and finish to start the 3Q, and continued to fly around defensively until he followed out with just under a minute left.

Westervelt shot a blistering 4/5 from beyond the arc in a matchup with Nova Village, showing his potential as a 3+D wing that fills up the stat sheet. He uses his size and frame well to bang in the paint for rebounds but can also switch out to guard perimeter players on the wing. His willingness to do the dirty work on both ends of the floor while stepping in to knock down shots or make the extra pass makes him a very valuable piece moving forward.

-Westervelt doesn’t move the needle much offensively right now as someone that can create his own shot or take guys off the bounce but he functions well as a good connector for this John Carroll offense. He does a great job of reading the help and knowing where the ball needs to get to whether it’s in his hands at the moment or not, often directing traffic from the top of the key for the Patriots. With good size (at least 6’5) and a strong frame, he carves out space and positions himself in the right spot to grab rebounds before finding a teammate or finishing himself. An effective wing prospect to track in the 2027 class.
