It seemed like any time Jack got a post touch, Maple Grove ended up putting points on the board. Against Totino-Grace he simply couldn’t be defended in isolation on the block, but when they brought in a double team Jack quickly located a kick-out pass for a wide open jumper. Even when defenders get physical with him, Jack is so tough to move from his spot, and his ability to finish with either hand makes him difficult to stop once he touches the ball. Thelen also showed touch away from the basket as he hit two 3’s and a turnaround jumper on the baseline. Maple Grove lost to a buzzer beater, but it was still an impressive showing from the 7’1 big man.

All eyes are on Jack right now after he de-committed from Wisconsin and opened things up. We’ve heard a number of teams have shown interest including UConn and Illinois. How much interest? We don’t know fully but we heard an Illinois visit was being talked about.
So with that happening, what did we see? On the second Thelen catch he gave a back side target to the rim, caught from Akan, and easily turned to score and giving up seven inches, Taban couldn’t do much with it. Jack also hit a three, scored a putback, then another putback, followed by another putback, and then a fallaway out of the post for a score. Thelen then hit a second three early in the first half followed by his fourth putback of the game. Late in the game Thelen scored on his second lob finish of the game putting his team up 58-54 with four minutes to go. Jack’s FIFTH putback of the game tied the contest at 60 with a minute to go. Ten field goals overall.
The eye opening play was Thelen sprinting the other way to block a transition lay-up off the glass. That was something that froze me and had to mentally rewind… Jack sprinted and caught up to a guard and smashed the attempt off the glass with that seven foot size. Impressive.

3SSB and committed to Wisconsin. In July Thelen had back-to-back high scoring games on the 3SSB Circuit in the final session proving he can score and make baskets inside. At the Top 32 showcase Thelen looked to be moving better than even last winter and offensively Thelen has come a long way since his sophomore year at STMA, especially stepping out on the perimeter and shooting from beyond the 3-point arc. Thelen looks better as a screen roller and his finishing is getting better with added strength. Thelen is a legit 7-footer, there’s no adding inches to boost his prospect profile like so many, and Thelen has always shown good instincts defensively taking up space and making possessions tough on opponents.

Jack is coming off a huge summer once he recovered from injury: he was offered by Wisconsin at a camp and then accepted that offer soon after, he helped D1 Minnesota to an elite eight finish in Adidas, he is about to be nationally ranked in the top 125 by 247 Sports, and he is about to be one of the top 2-3 prospects in his class locally. Seven footers are rare, and seven footers with a passion for scoring are even rarer.

Jack Thelen – The Wisconsin committed 7-footer from Maple Grove Thelen put together a seven for nine shooting performance scoring 18 points and grabbing 8 rebounds in D1 Minnesota 3SSB’s win against Dream Vision 17U 3SSB. Thelen managed a block in the game as well. Saturday Thelen had another strong performance to lead D1 Minnesota to a win over Upward Stars. Thelen had 19 points on nine of twelve from the floor.
