Expert Analysis
Sam Duren | Prep Hoops Scout
Leonard is a shifty and gifted slasher for Putnam City North, who can put defenders on skates. His change of direction ability might be unmatched in this class, with an electric driving style. He’s a sight to watch in transition with his pace and quickness, while continuing to add to his bag in the halfcourt. The junior is a capable shooter off the dribble, which makes even more dangerous as a slasher. The offensive production has been there for the Panther, but the wins haven’t followed as PCN has struggled this season. Still, there’s obvious “juice” to his game marking Leonard as one of the players who could end up with one of the highest upsides in the class if he continues to add to his unique scoring abilities.

led the Panthers in scoring with 17 points, knocking down a pair of three pointers on his way. There were a few times that he showed off his handles, in one instance he had a nice crossover that lost the defender as he stepped back to drain the mid-range jumper. He grabbed around 4-5 rebounds in the duration of the game, in which he would push the pace. This led to him having a good drive and kick to an open shooter. The shooter missed it, but it showed a glimpse of being able to playmake. On one play, he drove the gap and finished through contact for an and-one opportunity. He got the job done on defense some, playing good perimeter defense and coming away with a couple of steals. One of the steals led to an assist for him. It was a strong performance against the top team in the state.

After struggling in an opening night viewing last week, this was a quality, aggressive performance from the junior combo guard. On the defensive end he uses his quickness and instincts to seemingly stay on opposing ball handlers as a second layer of skin. He occasionally uses his hands to force turnovers but most often relied on his footwork to turn them and make life uncomfortable. His offensive game in this contest was more about getting to the rim, where he’s shifty at navigating traffic. And while his jumper wasn’t fouling, he did hit one particularly nice and tough mid-range shot. Leonard and his previously mentioned teammate Brown hold the key to a successful season with impactful play on both ends of the court.

After being a transition and defensive monster as a sophomore for a senior heavy Panthers squad, it’s time for Leonard to take on more of a primary scorer and leader. From a scoring standpoint, the junior guard looks ready to explode. His handle looks tighter, with more crossovers, hesitations and counters to not only blow by defenders in transition, but also create separation and gain a step in the halfcourt. With the ball in his hands, he looked just as likely to knife by the defenders or pull up and drain a mid-range or three pointer when given space. Improve scoring will be the first benchmark for the upside combo guard, but watching how he leads a younger PCN team as they attempt to maintain their place as one of the best programs in the state will be another way to track his development.

Among this list, Leonard is likely closer to being a combo or even off the ball guard. But he excels at an important aspect to being a modern lead guard, defense. Blessed with quickness and a good wingspan, Leonard is a terror as an on the ball defender. Those traits of course create transition opportunities, where he thrives as an exciting finisher. But he’s also willing to move his feet and work at making ball handler’s life difficult even without going for steals. While he also often working hard to deny the ball when defending off the ball.
Offensively, Leonard has started to become more reliable as a shooter from beyond the arc, putting together some impressive three point barrages this spring and summer. He’s the type of athletic, dynamic, prospect who could be molded into an ideal modern lead guard.

Quick and athletic, Leonard thrives in havoc and uptempo games. He’ll pick up the full court on defense, forcing opposing ball handlers to turn and be uncomfortable. While also being a successful gambler in the passing lanes, which gives him a chance to show off his improving explosiveness at the rim. Along with his defensive credentials, he’s becoming more of a dynamic threat as a shooter and scorer after a productive spring with Texas Impact 4:13.

During this past season, Leonard was a major disruptor on the defensive end and flashed potential as a huge finisher at the rim. So far this spring he’s shown that he has the upside to be a primary scorer. A couple weeks ago, the quick combo guard had a 30 piece against a top Houston program. He’ll be playing in Arizona in UAA’s 16U Division, with Texas Impact 4:13.
