Robbie Hodin | Prep Hoops Scout
I kept waiting for Johnson to cool off during the NEPSAC showcases, but it never seemed to happen. The undersized PG is 5-foot-11 on a good day, but he has an incredible knack for getting his shot off against the outstretched arm of longer and bigger defenders. He gets tons of elevation on his shot, and he can create a decent one literally whenever he wants. Johnson needs to refine his shot selection, but his ability to make difficult shots over the defense will really begin to shine when he’s a go-to end of shot clock guy for Suffield Academy this upcoming season. Johnson is a very exciting player who will garner D3 looks but will look like a scholarship player at times given the difficulty of shots he can hit.

Johnson might be the best shooter on Suffield Academy’s roster. The point guard is only 5-foot-11, but he gets solid elevation on his jumper and gets it off very quickly, which makes him a threat on the perimeter despite his lack of size. He can shoot it coming off screens, off the dribble, or in the triple threat position. Lomicka and Maxwell-Grimes will probably set him up for a good number of outside shots this season. Once the defense overplays him, Johnson does a good job attacking closeouts and making rim reads. These skills will probably earn him a D3 roster spot (or close to that level) somewhere in the coming years.

Johnson, a lead guard out of Suffield Academy, checks in at #131 overall and #18 among the point guards. Johnson is one of the top perimeter shooters in this class, showing a good understanding of how to use screens as both a scorer and facilitator. He makes good decisions with the ball in his hands, knows how to pitch it ahead in transition, and does a nice job of playing at different speeds to get to his spots as a dribbler. Defensively, he’s capable of guarding either back-court spot, showing quick hands and quick feet that allow him to generate plenty of steals and deflections.
