has shown over the past few weeks that he’s more than capable of taking on an expanded primary ball handler role. He consistently flashes the kind of intangibles you want in a primary ball handler— confidently initiating offense, getting teammates in the right spots, and maintaining poise and composure as both a half court facilitator and an effective playmaker in transition, all while remaining a legitimate scoring threat. Mazzella’s perimeter shooting is what almost always stands out right away, particularly when he’s stepping into shots in rhythm with polished footwork as a movement shooter. All while also showing strong decision making in PnR situations— reading defensive coverages well to create smooth pull up jumpers from beyond the arc and capitalize in the mid-range against sagging big defenders.
With plenty of LM and high academic programs having shown early interest dating back to as far as last summer, look for Mazzella to continue to cement himself on the radar of those college programs.

displayed a lot of strong intangibles that you like to see in a primary ball handler— capable of initiating sets and getting teammates organized as a strong and confident ball handler both in half court sets and making plays in the open floor while still posing as a scoring threat. Mazzella’s perimeter shooting is what stands out immediately, especially when he’s able to step into shots in rhythm with strong footwork as a movement shooter, while also doing a strong job reading defensive coverages in PnR action, to knock down smooth perimeter pull ups and get to his mid range pull up against sagging bigs.

Mazzella is a total stud. He exudes everything about what it means to be a true point guard. The 6-foot NJ Beasts guard has a super low center of gravity and a phenomenal handle, so nobody can take the ball from him despite the pressure they might put on him. The junior has incredible quickness to the rim, too, and he’s also a phenomenal passer and floor general, so paint touches for him always lead to an excellent shot for himself or his teammates. On one play, Mazzella used a Smitty dribble to get by a defender on the baseline and then quickly flipped up a lefty layup on the right side to squeak past the defense. He is extremely efficient and provides everything you need in a point guard. D1s should definitely be interested despite his lack of size.

showcased much of his overall skillset— facilitating the basketball and getting his teammates the ball in the right spots on the floor while also remaining a threat to score particularly with his dangerous outside shooting. Mazzella rarely ever forces offense and has a natural tendency to make a lot of the right reads to keep opposing defenses honest and that was very much the case in Bergen Catholic’s matchup against Spire Academy (OH), with the different layers he adds to their offensive success.

made a number of difference making plays down the stretch to help his team seal the resurgent victory over St. Peter’s Prep. Proving to be a selfless and high impact player, Mazzella dug deep as Bergen Catholic faced an 11 point deficit, ultimately embracing doing a lot of the little things that impact winning— pressuring the ball coupled with keen defensive instincts and a tenacious effort to come up with a huge steal that led to an easy layup off an inbound turnover and launching a precise and on target length of the court in bound pass for an easy full court layup on the offensive end, all before knocking down a timely three from the perimeter that spark plugged this triumphant comeback for Bergen Catholic.

thrived as an exceptional off ball threat in Bergen Catholic’s early matchup against Coronado (NV). With Bergen Catholic’s offensive actions producing a number of ball reversals and dribble drive penetration, Mazzella benefited from the rotations that the opposing defense were forced into once Bergen got into their actions— attacking driving angles off the bounce and converting on clean and open looks from three point distance, showcasing his lethal sharpshooting ability.

will look to show that he can provide a real scoring punch while also demonstrating he can facilitate the basketball and get his teammates the ball in the right spots on the floor from the point guard spot. He’s proven effective attacking downhill, using craft to finish through traffic at the rim. In addition to his driving ability, Mazzella can consistently knock down outside shots, particularly off the catch and out of ball screens—adding another layer to his offensive impact.

Steering a near-upset over the EYBL’s NY Rens, Mazzella staked his claim among the top 16U floor generals on the HGSL. Having played up last summer and with two years of extensive varsity reps under his belt, the experience clearly pays dividends for Mazzella as he operates a step ahead of others as an extension of the coach on the floor. He’s calculated and efficient in pursuit of his spots, using a low center of gravity to his advantage in getting underneath of defenders to turn the corner and draw help defenders. A pure floor general, he’ll have no problem garnering D1 attention if coaches are able to see further performances like Saturday’s against that type of competition.
