New Jersey Legacy Team Camp: Additional Session I Standouts

Returning for another summer, New Jersey Legacy Basketball once again assembled a talented group of North Jersey prospects for its annual team camp, featuring multiple days of competition between programs and giving some of the state's talent an opportunity to showcase their game. Hosted at Weequahic High School in Newark, NJ this year's New Jersey Legacy Team Camp offered an early look at players settling into new programs following offseason transfers along with others expected to take on expanded roles this winter, providing valuable insight into which prospects are positioned to make an impact during the upcoming high school season. With that in mind, here's another look at some of the players who stood out during the opening session of New Jersey Legacy's team camp earlier this week.    Thriving off activity on the interior, [player_tooltip player_id='2201948' first='Asante' last='Jones'] leaned into his strengths and continued to demonstrate that his greatest impact will always stem from when he plays with constant effort and energy, on both ends of the floor, in the paint. Jones possesses a lengthy and wiry frame paired with hints of fluidity at his size, physical tools that he often leveraged into production around the basket— particularly with his rebounding, extending possessions with his work on offensive glass and inside finishing, rim running in transition and mixing in some low post finishes on the block.     A tough and competitive guard, [player_tooltip player_id='2202019' first='Alex' last='Mazzella']'s game translates seamlessly through his ability to provide value both with and without the ball. He displayed his well rounded skill set by consistently facilitating the offense, delivering passes to teammates in advantageous positions, and maintaining his scoring threat—particularly with his reliable outside shooting. Mazzella rarely forced the action, instead allowing the game to come to him and consistently making the right reads to keep opposing defenses on their heels. Evident across multiple matchups where he showcased the multiple dimensions he brings to Bergen Catholic's offensive success.     Undersized but still capable of creating offense off the bounce, [player_tooltip player_id='3653179' first='Avery' last='Cherilus-Rogers'] showed some promise in the scoring pop he provided for this Weequahic group— converting on a handful of soft touch runners and floaters coupled with strong finishes against lengthier defenders in the lane when he exploited driving angles out of a plethora of ball reversals in natural offensive flow, attacking out of different ball screens, and even in isolation scenarios.     [player_tooltip player_id='2347952' first='Jahlil' last='Owusu'] is an instant offense type of scorer who can heat up quickly, stringing together points in a hurry while displaying a diverse scoring repertoire. Providing plenty of scoring production, Owusu got going early on capitalizing on plenty of looks that occurred organically, finishing at the rim in transition and cutting to open space off the ball in different actions. As the action progressed, Owusu later showcased much of the isolation scoring that he's developed a keen reputation for— creating scoring opportunities off the dribble with his creativity off the bounce to create separation whether it was knocking down tough mid range pull ups or finishing craftily at the rim.     [player_tooltip player_id='2786683' first='CJ' last='Brown']'s athleticism pops almost immediately, particularly in the open floor as he loves to get out in transition, excelling as a vertical lob threat finishing above the basket as a lane runner. Brown's athleticism in the open floor translates to making plays on the defensive end of the floor as well, leveraging his length and timing to contest attempts at the rim and pin shots against the glass. Continuing to develop a more consistent half court skillset, Brown showed some intrigue and promise as a perimeter shooter, establishing himself as a respectable threat from three point range, stepping into a number of in rhythm looks and knocking down open shots from beyond the three point arc.
