You might not be able to find their hometown on a map, but that hasn’t stopped them from making a name for themselves and now jumping onto our radars. First up, we have 2A guards from the 2021 class to keep an eye on.
Kage Peppers – Sargent
The Farmers had one player this year average double-digits for the season. The 5’10 athletic point guard, Kage Peppers, brought it in every game. Peppers makes up his mind and gets to his spots and has a 3-pointer that opened up the floor for him as well. When he is not getting to the rim, he is finding the open spot on the floor to knock it down. Peppers hit 59 3-pointers on the season and also was the team’s best perimeter defender at 2.6 steals a game. He has to step it up this year as all eyes will be on him to lead the way.
Nedas Gailus – Thomas MacLaren School
Cool name, smoove game. Gailus 13.3 points, 5.4 rebounds, and just under three assists. Gailus can play on or off the ball. He is a well-rounded guard with a good IQ. He doesn’t force much and lets the game come to him. He hits the three when he sets his feet. Physical enough to help out on the glass. Keep an eye out for him.
Stephen King – Gilpin County
The school in Blackhawk was not as money as their casinos, but they did have a player at the school that could score in bunches. King put up a team-high 13.5 points a game for Gilpin County and had a season-high of 22 points. King gets to the rim and finishes and also makes sure he gets to the FT line. He will have to open up the rest of his game and get teammates involved if he wants to turn things around, but he certainly can score the ball.
Reese Onago – Clear Creek
Onago is a taller combo-guard that did a bit of everything for Clear Creek last season. The 6’1 guard was the teams leading scorer (13.3 points), a solid rebounder(4.8 boards), and also dished the ball off when he saw the open man. He put up 3.2 assists a game while also locking down on defense and turning it into scoring opportunities. Onago will have to work on opening up the floor with his outside shot as he progresses on that part of his game. Still, if he can continue bringing it in different ways, I can see Clear Creek turning some heads next season as they appear to have a pretty good group.
Samuel Uyemura – Wray
Raise your hand if you know where Wray, Colorado is. Well, I don’t, which is shocking because they were one of the top teams in all of 2A last year and they were in arguably the top conference in 2A last year. A big reason why they did so well is Samuel Uyemura. The small guard had a big game. He was a 3-point shooter that, while the stats do not back him up, was able to impact game with his long-range shooting. He hit 66 3-pointers on the year. Played sound defense and played the passing lanes well and is a player that Wray will lean on to make big plays for them next season. Expect another big season for Wray and for them to build.
