The Shamrocks exploded in the 3rd quarter as they out-scored Male by 6 and led 47-41 heading into the 4th quarter. The 4th quarter is where things got going. Male’s intense defense only allowed 6 points in the last 8 minutes of the game. Male finished the game on a 21-6 run. #3 Male defeated Trinity, 62-53. Trinity falls to 14-12 and #3 Male improves to 22-4.
Seven Takeaways
Kaleb Glenn (Male)
The freshman big man was everywhere from the jump. Scoring down-low and rebounding the ball is his game. He finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Standing at 6’6″ as a freshman is already noticeable but his jumping ability is what is truly insane. He can get up super high on rebounds and on slam dunks. He finished this win over Trinity with a spin move and a two-handed slam. The crowd erupts every time Kaleb makes a big play. Only a freshman and he has a chance at winning 7th Region Player of the Year. He is THAT good. The best of Glenn is yet to come.
Ethan Hodge (Trinity)
The Xavier baseball commit shows again as to why he is an athlete. I haven’t seen him play baseball, but his basketball IQ is truly impressive. He finished with a team-high 16 points. He also managed to snag down 7 rebounds. He caught fire in the 3rd quarter as he scored 8 of his 16 points. He attacks the basket at will as well as having a pretty mid-range jumper. He needs to work on going left. Every time he drove to the basket it would always be to the right. Besides that aspect of his game, he was great. He gave the Shamrocks a real chance to beat the #3 team in the state.
Tyren Moore (Male)
The Lincoln Memorial signee is silky smooth. His pull-up game is some of the best I have seen. He finished with 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists. People may already know this about Tyren but he can shoot. He hit 4 threes in their comeback victory Saturday night. He was also attacking the inside with his fancy dribbling skills and great finishing ability. Moore is a big reason this Male team goes and goes HARD. He has a whole lot of passion for this game and he is willing to do whatever it takes to get his team within striking distance. They found themselves in trouble after the 3rd quarter but Tyren knew what he and the Bulldogs were capable of.
Zach Stahlman (Trinity)
Everytime I come to see this junior guard, he impresses me. His mid-range game and attacking ability is what stands out the most. He finished with 14 points and 5 rebounds. He is aggressive when he attacks and doesn’t shy away from anything, especially the big moments. He also came alive in the 3rd quarter as he scored 8 of his 14 points in this quarter. His shot release is late, so it is hard to tell when exactly he is going to release the ball. It has the defenders jumping too early and not getting a better jump on things. It’s like Stahlman pauses in mid-air during his jump shot. This Trinity team will be exciting next year, considering all of their best players are juniors or lower.
Howard Fleming (Male)
The Illinois State signee is probably the most intriguing player out on the court. He recently just got back from injury and has been a very solid piece that the Bulldogs needed. Fleming finished with 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 emphatic blocks. He is long and athletic, but he has all the attributes of a great point guard. He can dribble, shoot, pass, rebounds, block shots, and play defense. He can do it all. He is a massive get for Male this late in the season. This makes them what everybody thought they’d be coming into the season. Fleming mixes things up for who comes out of the 7th region and heads to Rupp Arena for state.
Cam McClain (Trinity)
The freshman guard that everyone should get familiar with. He finished the game with 8 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists. He hit a big 3-pointer in the 2nd quarter that gave Trinity the momentum heading into halftime. He has great feel for the game. He only hit one three in this game but I’ve been to others where he hits a bunch. He can light it up from distance. He has a whole lot of talent for only being a freshman. Being underneath Coach Mike Szabo will definitely help this young man grow as a player and a person. Cam McClain will be a name you’ll be hearing for years to come. The next David Johnson?
Male wins 7th straight
Male wins their 7th straight and improves to 22-4. They rank #3 in the AP and they are top of the 7th region standings as well. Getting Howard Fleming back into the rotation is huge for this team. This is back to back games where Male was struggling through the first three quarters, then fought their way back and won the game. Their intensified defense is what is scary to opponents. They are long, athletic, and they will flat-out get after you. They can score anywhere on the court whether it be on the inside or from deep range. The Bulldogs are playing some of the best basketball in the state and it will be exciting to see what they do moving forward.
