Hustle plays, defense, energy, rebounds and doing other little things to help a team win basketball games often gets overlooked by media and college coaches when it really comes down to it. These are the five players that did the little things to help their team win games!
Underappreciated All-Tourney Team:
2020 6’5 F Jalen Page (Colorado Titans 17u) – Jalen Page has skill and talent, but he could very easily find himself on the floor in college due to his heart and will to win. Jalen can produce a double-double in any given game and he puts his body on the line in order to do so. He has college attention already, but someone is going to be getting a skilled hustle player at 6’5.
2020 6’4 F Sal Nevarez (New Mexico D1 Ambassadors 17u) – The more I watched Sal, the more I liked him. He does not look the part and he is undersized for his position, but he just flat out gets it done due to his strength, motor and unassuming skill set. Sal had one game he put up 30 plus points and it wasn’t the prettiest of 30, but he put the ball in the hoop nonetheless. Some may not believe he is a college prospect due to his lack of height for the post position, but I believe he can help some program, because production outweighs potential in some instances.
2019 6’5 F Mitchell Jones (WA Elite 17u) – This unsigned senior will likely find himself playing at the JUCO level and he could in fit in well at the NWAC level with his toughness and aggression inside the paint. Mitchell is not afriad of contact in the paint and he will take charges, take some hard fouls and do the gritty things to help his team win.
2021 6’1 G Randall Branch (The Truth OC 16u) – This attacking guard was a definite energy starter for the Truth. While some guards play with a cool jacket on these days, Randall showed the ability to use passion and energy to his advantage. I only saw this team play once, but he impressed in the one game that I saw.
2023 6’7 F Thomas Brascia (The Truth OC 15u) – This rising freshman is an absolute scrapper on the court and not afraid to mix things up. Despite playing up a grade, Brascia more than held his own on both sides of the ball. He had one of the best dives for a loose ball that I saw all event. He slid about 10-15 feet for a loose ball and got his hands on it to knock it off the other team. While his skill set is decent and developing, his heart and hustle will take him over the top.
