The Week Ahead: 2/4-2/9
We’ve finally reached February and only have two weeks of regular season basketball left. District seeding and draws are close to in place and it won’t be long until we’re crowning district champions all across the state. Before we reach that point, here’s a breakdown of some of the biggest games across Kentucky this week.
Monday, February 4
- Glasgow travels to Allen-County Scottsville in a game between two teams who could make a surprise run through the 4th region this month. Nik Sorrell and Mason Shirley will be a fun point guard match-up to watch.
- Danville takes their impressive record into Franklin County and the Flyers will be looking to spring the upset. Dante Hayden and Kyle Stivers is the guard match-up to watch in this one.
- Rivalry renewed in northern Kentucky as Newport travels to Newport Central Catholic. Both teams could play spoiler in the 9th region tournament this month.
Tuesday, February 5
- Bowling Green is reeling from a John Hardin beat down on Friday. Owensboro drilled Apollo Friday night. It will be interesting to see if BG rebounds to beat the Red Devils on Tuesday.
- John Hardin continues their quest for a perfect season as they travel to Bardstown. The Tigers will present a tough matchup for guards Jachai Walker and Aaron Scott.
- Simon Kenton and Campbell County lock horns in what should be a very exciting game. Both teams get up and down the floor and this shouldn’t be any different. Kelly Niece against Drew Wilson should be fun.
- Lexington Catholic makes the trip to Richmond for a game with Madison Central. Seniors Brice Scott and Isaiah Cozart going head to head in the post could be a battle.
Wednesday, February 6
- Cooper continues their quest to get back to Rupp Arena. Their stifling defense will take on Newport Central Catholic in a potential 9th region tournament preview.
- Male is hot after wins over Collins and Trinity last week. They’ll look to keep it rolling as they travel to DeSales on Wednesday night.
- John Hardin tries to stay perfect on the season when they make the short trip to North Hardin in a district game that could be replayed in the district semifinals in 2 weeks.
Thursday, February 7
- Two of Central Kentucky’s finest lock horns as Jacob Hobbs and Central Hardin host Luke Morrison and South Oldham. Hobbs is committed to Lipscomb while Morrison is taking a visit to Lipscomb on Saturday.
- Two of the best teams in the 16th go head to head Thursday when Morgan County travels to Elliott County. There’s a chance we could see a rematch for the regional championship in a couple of weeks.
- Woodford County will try to spoil Scott County’s perfect season against Kentucky teams when they travel to Georgetown on Thursday night.
Friday, February 8
- Big time game in the 7th region when Ballard hosts Male. There will be a ton of talent on the court and scoring should get well into the 70s before the final buzzer goes off.
- Really good game between the 9th and 10th regions as Campbell County and Cooper lock up. Both teams are likely favored to get to Rupp Arena next month.
- Big time implications for seeding in Lexington as Catholic hosts LCA. The 43rd is wide open this year and it will be interesting to see how the teams change their strategy from last meeting.
- Another big game in the 5th as Taylor County and LaRue County meet. This is another one that could easily be repeated next month with a trip to the Sweet Sixteen on the line.
Saturday, February 9
- Logan County travels to Allen-County Scottsville in a game between two teams who have really surprised a lot of people this season. Both are contenders for the 4th region title.
- Alex Holley and Jonathan Tilllman is a really good match-up in the post as Ballard makes the trip to the state capital to take on Frankfort.
- Massive game in the 2nd region when Hopkinsville takes on UHA. James Nicholas and TaQuan Hollowell is a fun match-up between two of the most competitive kids in Western Kentucky.
