Lasalle took a step towards securing their playoff position when they used a big 4th quarter to pull away from a scrappy Scappoose team looking for it’s first league win of the year.
No Size No Problem
Lasalle Prep plays with a roster lacking a traditional post presence on either end of the floor, but can put 5 guys on the floor at a time who can shoot it from range, as well as attack off the dribble. They did a nice job of spreading out the bigger Scappoose group and exploiting favorable match ups.
Boyd Brothers
Not the name of a coffee shop, but rather a reference to Lasalle’s talented brother duo of 2021 guard Nic Boyd & 2019 wing Alex Boyd. The older Boyd, who has committed to D3 Kenyon in Ohio came off the bench to provide athleticism, rebounding, & defensive energy in addition to knocking down a couple of perimeter shots. It was little brother Nic, a 6’0 point guard who stole the show knocking down 7 3’s on his way to a game high 24 points.
Scappoose Scraps
Despite struggling to score, the Indians in their first year at the 5A level, impressed with their competitiveness & hustle. They had the game down to a single digit margin before Lasalle caught fire from deep in the 4th quarter. Senior guard Connor Mcnabb, senior post Konnor Nelson, & junior wing Kyle Negelspach lead the way for Scappoose.
Lasalle Sophs
The future on the perimeter appears to be bright for Lasalle as three sophomores in addition to Nic Boyd played big minutes and roles for the Falcons. Ian Simmons, Kendric Taylor, & Jake Owens all showed signs of becoming quality players in the future.
Quiet Night
Tuesday was a relatively quiet night for senior wing Jace Norton, one of the better returning players in 5A. Scappoose played extra attention to Norton, guarding him with the athletic & physical Mcnabb (1st team all state football) and Norton never seemed to find a rhythm. He showed flashes of a sweet shooting stroke and a high basketball IQ, which should help him find a college home next season.
