Scouting Takeaways: Sherwood vs. Southridge
Sherwood recently made the trip to Southridge to battle in one of their last summer league games this month. We recently got a chance to catch them both in action.
Southridge took an early lead and never looked back, cruising to a 79-43 victory at home as both teams got a chance to play all of their players.
Obviously one game does not define a player or his game but there can definitely be some takeaways from watching action even in a single setting – even if it is a summer league game. Here are some observations of some of the top performers from Southridge and Sherwood.
Brock Henry (2019 Southridge HS) – Henry came off a great shooting performance at Portland State Team Camp and while he wasn’t as sharp from three-point range (2-for-8) he still showed off some great scoring skills as he was able to make athletic drives to the basket and finish well around the rim. He had a well-rounded game in the minutes he played, not only scoring 20 points but also grabbing four rebounds, dishing off three assists, and grabbing a couple of steals.
Zach Galvin (2019 Southridge HS) – Galvin will likely be the second offensive option at Southridge this year and the 6-foot-4 wing showed off a smooth jumper from beyond the arc, hitting 4-for-6 threes in the first half. Things slowed down in the second half as he missed all four attempts from downtown, but overall he scored 18 points on 7-for-13 shooting, added four rebounds, and was extremely active on defense, diving on the floor more than once chasing after a loose ball.
Jha-Barrie Portis (2021 Southridge HS) – Southridge will be a bit undersized after losing Filip Fullerton to graduation, so some smaller yet active players like Portis will have to chip in. Portis – who played JV last year at Lake Oswego – showed some spunk off the bench at Portland State Team Camp and did that as well against Sherwood as an active defender. But Portis also showed some nice touch from the perimeter, hitting 3-for-4 from three point range on his way to 13 points.
Jamison Guerra (2020 Sherwood HS) – Guerra is a heady and calm point guard who really didn’t force the action against Southridge, although the team could probably have used a little more offense from him. Still, he did hit a couple of shots (including a three) and dished out a couple of assists in the blowout loss while showing off some solid ball-handling skills.
