With the state tournament tipping off on Wednesday across the New Jersey, it's a good time to take a look at a handful of underclassmen who have established themselves as key factors heading into the postseason.

There isn't a bigger presence in South Jersey, both literally and figuratively, than Malukila. The 7-footer has been a consistent two-way force in the paint as a sophomore, helping lead the Eagles to the top seed in SJ Non-Public A. He's been a walking double-double with his ability to act as a dumpoff threat or score in the post, while flashing comfort as a shooter and decisionmaker from the perimeter. Defensively, he shows strong timing as a rim protector with glimpses of mobility away from the rim. It will take until the spring and summer to see him tested by similarly-sized competition, but Malukila is trending up as a likely high-major target in the 2028 class.

Quickly emerging into one of the region's most intriguing long-term prospects, Robinson is playing his best basketball at the right time as Overbrook looks to make a run as the sixth seed in SJ Group 2. Having tacked on several inches to his frame since last season, Robinson has already more than doubled his production, highlighted by a career-high 37-point effort in the Tri County Conference tournament. He's an enticingly fluid hybrid forward with the length to make an impact inside but a natural comfort to his skillset on the perimeter. His consistency is still a work in progress as he acclimates to his body and starts the process of adding strength having yet to turn 16, but the upside could be scary for Robinson if it all comes together in time.

Steering the ship for South Jersey's best team and the top seed in SJ Non-Public A, Dozier has established himself early on among the top tier of freshman lead guards across the region. With a rangy frame and smooth athleticism, he plays with a maturity beyond his years while gliding to his spots off the bounce and making high-IQ reads as a scorer or passer. He shows advanced pace operating in pick-and-roll with either hand and is also comfortable sliding off-ball as an efficient catch-and-shoot threat. On the other end, he stands out with his length and quickness defending the point of attack. Overall, Dozier checks a lot of the boxes you look to see at an early stage for a future D1 guard.

Potentially the most productive freshman in South Jersey, Lacey has been a consistent factor for the Irish with double-figure scoring in all but four games throughout the season. He doesn't necessarily look the part at first glance, but has proven himself to be a potent threat from the perimeter with a smooth, confident stroke and deep range out beyond the arc. He shows a proficient skillset attacking off the bounce with no fear going in amongst the trees, along with a feisty competitiveness when defending the ball on the other end. His long-term outlook will depend a lot on his physical progression but Lacey figures to be among the torch-bearers for South Jersey's 2029 class for years to come.

One of the more electric scorers in the state, Thompson enters states on a high note fresh off a 50-point game and Atlantic City's first Cape Atlantic title in over a decade. Blisteringly quick off the bounce, he's explosive getting downhill in the halfcourt and can really fly in transition. He's an above-the-rim threat as a finisher in space with the ability to get hot in a hurry and connect in bunches as a shooter from the perimeter. Thompson already holds FBS offers as a wide receiver but is emerging quickly as a basketball prospect as well.

The primary frontcourt presence for the fabled Panthers, Robinson has emerged into a consistent focal point after starting in spurts as a freshman in a complementary role. He brings an appealing combination of skill and power with a motor that doesn't stop running. Robinson is able to punish mismatches on the block, act as a hub in DHO actions, or go get his own with his energy on the offensive glass. He's also intrigued with flashes as a shooter out to the perimeter and grab-and-go threat off the defensive boards. Robinson is a Power 6 prospect as an edge rusher and leans more toward football, but is establishing himself as a key factor in the Group 2 tournament.

Arguably the best freshman shooter in the state, Whitworth has stepped up right away as one of Clearview's leading scorers heading into the SJ Group 3 bracket. He's a dynamic threat from long range with a quick release whether spotting up or running off screens. He keeps defenses honest with intriguing flashes of skill attacking closeouts off the bounce. A coach's son, he plays with a high IQ and does a great job of staying moving without the ball. He'll have to work to add strength to his frame over time but has clear long-term upside with his skillset.

Another freshman focal point for Clearview, Riddick has shown flashes of brilliance amid bouts with injury while establishing himself as one of the area's most intriguing long-term prospects in the 2029 class. A long and lanky wing, he's still coming into his own physically and athletically but shows promising markers at an early stage. From a skill standpoint, he shows natural touch as both a perimeter shooter and finisher near the rim with intriguing instincts to his ball skills and footwork as a slasher. With his length, versatility, and high-level athletic bloodlines, Riddick clearly has an appealing outlook as a potential D1 prospect with upside to spare as he continues to develop.
