Weekend Preview: Adidas May Classic
The Annual Adidas May Classic takes place in Indianapolis this weekend. Many of Kentucky’s top AAU programs and players are going to be headed north on Friday to play in one of the top Spring events in the Midwest. Here’s a quick primer for some of the top programs and teams this weekend.
17u
The 17u Louisville Magic stumbled to a 1-8 record in the Adidas Gauntlet but will look to regain their footing in the May Classic. At last check, their 17u roster consisted of out of state players and 2018 kids and Lexington Catholic’s Brice Scott and Louisville Male’s Hunter McCutcheon.
Indiana Elite 2019 should be the favorites to win the whole tournament this weekend. Kentucky’s Kyle Rode and Michael Moreno are two of the hottest recruits in the Midwest over the last month or so and are stars for IE 2019.
Louisville Legends 17u is going to be their 16u playing up along with the addition of Aspire Academy’s DeSean Aikens.
Manimal Elite will be back in action after 3-6 in the Adidas Gold Gauntlet over the 2 April live periods. Over those two weekends, they had multiple injuries and attrition so they went through 16 players in 2 tournaments. It will be interesting to see which players are on the floor for Coach Stallworth this weekend. Unsigned senior from Elizabethtown Darius Harding led Manimal in minutes played and points scored.
Lexington based Charlotte Court will be in action at the May Classic as well. They played in the HoopSeen ATL Jam last weekend.
Team KY Pressure is listed in the event as well.
16u
Kentucky Pressure 16u has their work cut out for them as they are in the same pool as Indiana Elite 2020 who lost their first game in over a year last weekend. Indiana Elite 2020 has Simon Kenton’s Kelly Niece on the roster.
Louisville Magic 16u will be back in action after going 4-0 last weekend to reach the Adidas Championships in New York. Male trio of Howard Fleming, Tyren Moore and Noah Courtney are buoyed by a supporting cast of Amari Taylor and Ohioans Jackson Ames and Zach Loveday.
The Ville 2020 will take the floor at 8 am on Saturday morning. Kentuckians Jared Courtney and JJ Traynor play a huge role on a team dominated by Indiana kids.
The Louisville Prospects look to bounce back from some early season stumbles. They will have a shot to win their pool this weekend.
Charlotte Court will have their 2020 group in action this weekend and should be favored to win their pool.
15u
Charlotte Court – Tyler will take on Indiana Elite 2021 on Saturday and will have their work cut out for them to reach the gold bracket.
Louisville Magic will be one of the favorites to win the whole tournament after going 8-0 in the Adidas Gold this spring. The Magic feature TJ Toney, Scotty Draud and Sam Conley.
G3 Grind features Kentuckians Jaden Rogers and Darrius Washington. They will be among the favorites to win the whole tournament after two good weekends against Under Armour teams.
Louisville Legends 15u will throw down with Hoop Dreams 15s on Saturday afternoon.
Manimal Elite are fresh off of qualifying for the Adidas Summer Championship by going 6-2 against Adidas Gold programs. They are likely to roll through their pool play and advance deep into tournament play if not win the whole thing.
The Louisville Prospects 15u have their work cut out for the against Indiana Elite Central. The Prospects are led by Jake Whitlock and Spencer Baird.
M.A.T.T.S. Mustangs 15u should get to gold bracket play. Connor Robinson and Ben Johnson are two of the leaders for the Mustangs.
Charlotte Court – Nimbo has a good shot to win their pool and advance to the Gold bracket play on Saturday.
