Recruiting Report: Trey Meister (2019)
Trey Meister became a more well known name during his junior season with the Scott Eagles. Trey stepped up to help fill the void left by the graduation of Jake Ohmer and became the leading scorer and rebounder for the 10th region runners-up. Heading into his 17u AAU season, Meister is playing with Ohio Ballstars. Trey has recently picked up a lot of small school interest and hopes to draw more college coaches playing on the Adidas Silver Gauntlet over the next few weekends. We recently caught up with Trey to discuss his junior season and hopes for his AAU season then looked ahead to his senior year playing for the Eagles.
PHKY: Describe your game for people who may never have seen you play. What are your strengths? What do you need to improve?
TM: I would describe my game as fun to watch, playing at a high level and a very quick pace. My strengths are high basketball IQ, versatility, shooting and rebounding. My areas for improvement are defending and not being so hard on myself that it takes me out of my game.
PHKY: Reflect on your high school season. Were you happy with your individual performance? Were you happy with your team results?
TM: I was very pleased with how I played throughout the season and thought I got a lot better, but I am not satisfied with how I did and still want to do a lot better next season. Our team lost in the regional championship which was very disappointing, but we still accomplished a lot, like making it to the championship of every tournament we played in. We are looking forward to a great state run next year! My Junior season accomplishments include: District and Regional All-Tournament team, MVP of the Bluegrass/Buckeye Charity Classic and Legacy Nissan Classic Player of the Game, among many other awards and recognition.
PHKY: Who are you playing AAU with? What are your expectations for your AAU season both as an individual and as a team?
TM: I am currently playing AAU with the Ohio Ballstars. During this AAU season I expect for myself to grow as a player both offensively and defensively. I also, want to become more of a leader because I know that is what I will have to do for school. My expectations for AAU as a team is for all of us to play at our highest potential and for us to get a lot of college exposure so that we all can play at the next level.
PHKY: What schools are recruiting you? Any offers? If you have offers, do you have a leader right now?
2019 Scott Wing Trey MeisterTM: I did very well at the University of Findlay’s Elite Combine Camp last summer, which led to several other invitations and I now have the following schools looking at me throughout AAU: Cleveland State, Adrian, Marietta, Hillsdale, Saint Francis, Wilmington and Saginaw Valley.
PHKY: What can you take from your AAU season and apply to your next high school season?
TM: During AAU I am always looking at the game differently and just trying to get better. I talk to different players learning from them and coaches on what I could do better and what moves to use in different scenarios. I am also practicing and using different moves so when school ball starts I have them mastered and won’t have to think twice about using them.
PHKY: What are your goals for your next high school season?
TM: Next high school season, I want us to be tenth region champions and for us to go far at state and win that as well. We will have 10 seniors and I think we all will have a key role in this goal, we are a very tight group so the chemistry is already there. My individual goals are not only to be a top player in the region, but a top player in the state. I train very hard and hold myself to very high standards and I have confidence in myself that I can do this.
Meister is definitely a candidate to move up the rankings after this AAU season and can fit in at the NAIA/D2 level. With a great summer in front of the right coaches, Trey could even sneak into the low D1 level. Regardless of what level he ends up at, Trey Meister will be a really good player in the 10th region next season and will certainly leave his mark at Scott High before graduation next Spring.
