Expert Analysis
Colby Giacubeno | Prep Hoops Scout
Cully had a coming out party of sorts over the weekend as he showcased his elite long-range shooting ability. If you’ve followed the P32 circuit at all this spring, this is no surprise to you. The 6’4″-6’5″ wing has been lighting it up for DC Assault 16s and the way he can rattle off 2-to-3 straight triples can change the course of a game in less than a minute. O’Connell is a team still getting their feet under them with chemistry and cohesion, so I’m not buying into the 1-3 showing considering their largely new roster and the high level of competition they faced. What I am buying (further) into though, is Cully being one of the most dangerous outside shooters in the DMV. The proof is in the pudding as he averaged 16.8PPG while converting at an alarming 46 percent from three on 35 attempts.

17p 3r (5/7 3P) vs Grind Until
-Love the progression of skills outside of the trademark shooting to add to Cully’s value as a prospect, as he found opportunities to chip down on bigs in the paint to rebound the ball and has improved his help responsibilities in the gap on drivers. Cully knocked down three 3s in the 1H to stifle a GU run then hit another two in the start of the 2H to give DCA the boost it needed to go on a 20+ point 3Q run to put the game out of reach. Cully knocked down shots off of movement, relocated well–especially in transition– to force long closeouts from defenders, and is moving on from shots more quickly to sprint back to the defensive end of the floor regardless of a make or miss. He spent most of his sophomore season adjusting to the tempo of varsity basketball with a good OC team and should head into the scholastic periods with some boosted confidence as both a shooter and overall player.

14p vs Pure Basketball
-Cully continues to make strides as a long-distance sniper that spaces the floor because of his movement ability off the ball and sheer confidence. Cully has great positional size, fades to the corner or lifts to the wings on a string with slashers to present an open passing angle for a high percentage look from beyond the arc. His conditioning has improved to allow him to play for longer stretches of time and provide a bit more pressure on the ball at the defensive end of the floor. Intriguing name to track in 2028 as he plays a key role for this DC Assault group and should be in line for a larger role next season at O’Connell with some key pieces graduating to college.

Cully is a skilled wing with good positional size who is poised for a much larger role next season at one of the country’s top programs. The sophomore plays with a high basketball IQ and strong feel for the game, consistently making the right reads and impacting winning. He has three-level scoring ability, can stretch the floor, and create offense when needed. With his combination of size, skill, and understanding of the game, Cully has a very bright future as a college prospect.
