As part of our preseason preview content, we're counting down the top 15 candidates for this year's Mr. Basketball award, presented annually to the top senior in the state. A long, lanky wing who can score from all three levels, he's a high IQ wing who knows how to get to his spots in the mid-range, defend multiple positions, and he's a really gifted passer who sees the floor at a high level. He would need to have a huge senior year to beat older brother Patrick's school record, but it (1,550) is within reach.   Why he can win Mr. Basketball: This award has evaded both of his older brothers (Joe Smoldt beat Connor, Jake Hilmer and DJ Carton took it over Patrick), but Jack has a chance to take it home because of his two-way prowess and the fact that this looks like a pretty wide-open year for the award, especially following the departure of Curtis Stinson Jr. Consider McCaffery to be co-favorites with Valley's Robinson to open the year.
