I can’t talk about Haywood without mentioning possibly the dunk of the year so far (I know it’s early, but this one has staying power).
Aside from the monster dunk, Haywood was a rock for Garfield in a big win over Kennedy. He showed excellent patience operating off the PNR, waiting for the gap to open and then darting down the lane. He had tough finish after tough finish at the rim, and most importantly, was able to spot the defense starting to collapse on him and be a playmaker for his teammates in what was a pretty balanced Bulldog attack.

Haywood started out the day with some impressive playmaking, attacking angles, showing off his plus burst with the ball, and drawing defenders with the intention to set up his teammates. Regardless of whether he was scoring or diming guys up, he showed off some truly impression explosiveness which highlights his ability to score from all three levels. He can get separation consistently with his stop-and-go ability and his big bursts down gaps.

Haywood is an elite finisher, and although he can score from every level, he’s most effective working into gaps inside and finishing near the cup. He combines great burst, acrobatics, and strength to finish at various angles and through multiple defenders. He’s able to work slow or fast with the ball and shows great patience and change of speeds. He averaged 19.4 PPG and score 20+ in three of their games over the weekend.

His talent was evident in some showcases and summer ball in 2023, but Haywood’s impact at Bellevue last season was above and beyond what we could have expected. His ability to create on the offensive end, nail big shots, and prove to be an asset on the defensive end were paramount to a big regular season for the Wolverines. He’s a guy that could jump up to be not just a top player in his class, but one of the top players in the state in the next year or two.

Haywood was one of the few freshmen in the state who quickly asserted himself at the higher levels this season. He’s a kid who can kill you from each level and has the handle and vision to work through defenses and get to his spots. In their opening game of Districts against West Seattle, the young guard showed that shiftiness, slipping between defenders with ease, playing strong off of two feet in the paint, and finishing with focus and touch. And while his footwork and offensive arsenal stand out in most games, he’s also a good athlete and made a key block in the game at the end of the third quarter.

Had only really seen him against other freshman until this point, but he belonged out there Saturday and didn’t slow down at all against the varsity competition. Didn’t look outmatched, physically, mentally, or skill-wise, and showed he has the gumption to take big shots, shoot from way back, and should be in store for some big scoring outputs this season.

A powerful scoring guard, Haywood has that elite first step and the strength to hold off defenders and finish through contact at the rim. He’s also a guy that can pull from three anytime the defenders’ hand is down. Aggressive, explosive, and smart, he’s a guard to watch who already has some size to him.
