9th Region POY and Other Top Region Performers
The Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches (KABC) released their list of each regions player of the year at the end of February. The list covers all 16 regions of the state and PHKY has your recap of each one, as well as other top performers who stood out during the 2016-2017 Kentucky high school basketball season.
9th Region Player of the Year :
Cole VonHandorf, Covington Catholic (2017)
The winningest player in Covington Catholic boys’ basketball history, VonHandorf has been a part of four 9th Region tournament finals, winning two, allowing the Colonels advancement to the Kentucky state tournament twice. In those appearances, VonHandorf has a state semifinal appearance and a state championship ring. This season VonHandorf helped guide the Colonels to a 31-5 overall record, losing to eventual state final contestant Cooper in the regional semifinal. VonHandorf averaged 17.6 points per game this season. He will be playing college basketball at Fairmont State University (NCAA Division II).
OTHER TOP REGION PERFORMERS:
Sean McNeil, Cooper (2017)
McNeil, a Bellarmine University commit, averaged 17 points per game this season. He also helped lead Cooper to the 9th Region championship and it’s first ever berth to the Kentucky state tournament. Cooper advanced to the state final before losing to Bowling Green. McNeil was a 1st team all-state selection.
Adam Kunkel, Cooper (2017)
Kunkel averaged 16.3 points per game this season and was a 3rd team all-state selection. He currently has D1 offers from Samford, Central Arkansas, and Winthrop.
C.J. Fredrick, Covington Catholic (2018)
Fredrick led the Colonels in scoring this season, averaging just over 19 a game. He currenlty holds offers from Iowa, Wright State, Miami (OH) and has taken unofficials to Indiana. He is currenlty ranked as one of the top 5 prospects in Kentucky’s 2018 class.
Brennan Hall, Newport Catholic Central (2018)
Averaging just under 15 points per game, Hall led Newport Catholic Central to a 21-13 overall record as the team’s floor general.
Hunter Meyer, Dixie Heights, (2017)
Meyer is going to play at the next level, most likely at the D3/NAIA stage. He’ll be able to have an impact there, easily. This season Meyer averaged 14.4 points per game and 5.4 rebounds.
