There were approximately 80 players who competed over the wet rainy weekend at Foothill HS. Here we take a deeper look into the talent on display at this event.
Marcellus Jackson 6’5 of Capital Christian HS.
The athletic Jackson is a shot blocker, he tried to block everything that went up around him. He avoids the contact and goes straight up to meet the ball at his highest point. He’s quite active in the post on both ends, going after rebounds, and working to get his points on put backs. He’s an excellent court runner in transition looking for lobs and dunks.
Amani Johnson 6’2 of Salesian Prep HS.
Johnson is one of the rising prospects in this 2024 class we hadn’t seen up until this event. He did a good job defending one of NorCal’s top prospects. He didn’t shut him down, but he did made him work for buckets in the second half when the game was on the line. He got his offense going in the second half going 4/4 from behind the 3-point line, leading to a victory. He’s a heads up player with good passing, on the perimeter and up the court. He has the size and strength to play through contact, and help with rebounding from the guard position. We’ll see more of him.
Marcel Longmire 6’5 of Armijo HS
Longmire got off to a good start at this event, working hard around the basket, and looking to secure rebounds. His shot wasn’t falling at first but he kept working in the post area. He was solid about 12ft, and in. He has a nice jump stop in the paint, along with the two dribble drive shot he got to go in. He defended in the post, and ran the court.
Marcel Pierre Louise Marcel Pierre Louise 6'6" | PF Head-Royce | 2024 State CA-N 6’6 of Head Royce HS.
Pierre Louise is making real progress as he’s trying to improve his game away from the basket, He hit some 3’s in the corner. At this event he showed he could put the ball on the floor using the two dribble drive to get to the basket. He was quite effective working in the post finishing shots on balance and going after rebounds, while doing a good job of running the court and finishing in transition. He has a good frame and is steadily improving his overall game.
Amari Davis 6’7 of Spanish Springs Nevada.
Davis has the longing wingspan working in his favor, distracting and changing shots in the post area. He works well in and around the basket on the offensive end scoring, and getting rebounds for put back buckets. He was good handling the ball in transition. He looks to spot up behind the 3-point line where he did have some success. He had a couple of transition dunks.
Sirvante Jones 6’0 of Pittsburgh HS.
Jones is athletic and plays with good energy. He’s one of those quick twitch athletes with good body control. He has good speed, and handles to get by defenders. He drove it hard used a jump stop in the key then use his extra energy to create a shot for himself, a jumper in the paint, a step through or a little fadeaway. He’s fast in transition putting pressure on the defender. He has the tools to be a top notch defender. A good upside, we’ll see more of him.
James Moore James Moore 6'2" | CG Clayton Valley Charter | 2024 State CA-N III 5’11 of Clayton Valley HS.
Moore got off to a slow start, after some attitude adjusting he started to show his skills as a guard. He has the speed, strength, and handles to get by most defenders with a burst, then take it strong to the rim to challenge bigs, he has good hops he might dunk on you if he gets a clear path. In the regular flow of the game he has a good 3-point shot.
Ja’len Flenory 5’9 of Cosumnes Oaks HS.
One of those speedy slick ball handling guards under 6’0 who plays with a chip on his shoulder. He’s fast in transition, has excellent vision and passing. He showed some ability to control the pace of the game. He can score with quick bursts to the basket in half court sets.
Josh Bonner 5’11 of Rio Americano HS.
We didn’t see Bonner until the first game on Sunday Morning. Lucky for us, we found one of the better 3-point shooters in NorCal. You can argue that he was left open at first, and he might have trouble getting his shot off at the next level. But after a you knock down a couple, the defense becomes aware of the shooter on the court. We saw him play 2 games on Sunday. Game one four 3’s. Game two an unofficial dad count 11. We had him making 10. Bonner can shoot! We’ll see more of him.
Caden Pinnick 5’9 of of Del Oro HS.
Pinnick played one game on Sunday, he did enough to show us he can play this game. He’s a busy 3 sport athlete sporting a 4.0 gpa in the classroom. A solid body guard with the tight handles to take his man off the dribble going to his left or right, and finish with the bigs in the paint trying to block his shot. He can hit the mid-range off the dribble and is trouble in transition. He can run an offense as well.
