Opportunities for underclassmen can be limited with the exception of those that are undeniably advanced and/or those that join programs with few other options. Junior year, however, marks a good measuring point for a prospect's true potential. The expanded roles, enhanced confidence, and elevated leadership expectations we see around this time create a perfect breeding ground for distinguishing the good versus the high-level. Here are five 2028's that I believe will be ready to shine under brighter lights in their third year.

The 2026 KY state runner-up, St. Xavier, will have a chance to repeat last season's success and Bray will likely step into a starting role in the effort. He contributed in a significant capacity off the bench last season, but we should see his stock and recruitment activities increase this year in conjunction with a higher usage rate. Out of everything he'll bring to the table, I expect his skills as a consistent straight-line driving threat to standout as the most noteworthy difference from his previous role. That combined with his size, knock-down shooting potential, rebounding knack, and ability to defend his position should make Bray one of the Tiger's most valuable pieces.

The younger brother of Prep Hoops' Top-20 ranked 2027 [player_tooltip player_id='2438889' first='Kamari' last='Roberts'], Kamarion has a lot of potential in his own right. He was the fourth leading scorer last season for a Fairdale squad that showed promise but didn't quite meet expectations. With the return of Louisville-commit [player_tooltip player_id='1751496' first='Ferlandes' last='Wright'], however, not only will the Bulldogs reemerge as the 6th Region favorites, but they should also have a legit shot at a state title run. Fairdale's 2027 class will draw a majority of everyone's attention, which will create ample opportunities for Kamarion to shine. His confidence and playmaking instincts should allow him to thrive in his role.

When I think of Louisville prospects with high-level shooting potential, DaJuan is one of the first to come to mind. He was given very limited opportunities as a sophomore at Jtown, yet somehow finished 3rd in 3pt fg scored on the season while connecting on 40% of his attempts. His ability to operate as a shot creator is one of the more undiscovered areas of his game that I think will emerge this year. His handle, speed, and creativity are legit forces that I can attest to. I'm interested to see just how efficient DaJuan can be with increased responsibilities as a ball handler and facilitator but I'm confident he has the tools to thrive in an expanded role.

Jonah is possibly Louisville's best kept secret. He'll return as the sole starter and the sole player to have averaged double figures (13 PPG) for the boys over on Rockford Ln last season. Shooting 39.4% from 3pt fg range and 80% from the charity stripe are promising figures given that his already high usage rate is bound to increase. What might be even more promising is his confidence and willingness to lead. I expect Jonah to be one of the best players in the 6th Region and with the help of fellow 2028's Jonah Martin and Kameron Weaver, I wouldn't be surprised if the Warriors pull off a few resume-building upsets.

Washburn, commonly known as "Z," has made significant strides since his middle school days at Stuart. He's always been a high-motor kid with elite athleticism but expanding his skillset and IQ at an advanced rate have been positive developments over the past two seasons. Head Coach Leroy Hickerson has entrusted Z with key varsity responsibilities since the moment he became a Redhawk but he'll have to operate as one-third of a big 3 this year as a junior after the program lost key production to the transfer portal. With 2027 [player_tooltip player_id='2124542' first='Darian' last='Shy'] running the show and 2028 [player_tooltip player_id='2451384' first='Prestyn' last='Wheatley'] serving as a do-it-all SF, I expect Z to thrive as the team's best slashing threat.
