Wisconsin Soph ID Camp: Mark's Top Performers

A quick look at a few of the individual standouts from the 2029 class I watched at the Prep Hoops Wisconsin Sophomore ID Camp held Saturday in Appleton. With more than 140 participants, it was difficult to see every player in the time frame allotted so please check out the reports from all of our Prep Hoops staff on the event to read about others who performed well.    A bit of an old-school player in that Zenke excels in taking a couple of hard dribbles into the lane and then rising up off two feet to make mid-range jump shots. That may drive analytics freaks a bit wild, but it was certainly effective for his team in Appleton. Coming off a strong freshman season where he averaged 10.5 points and 6.7 rebounds, Zenke is one of the better wing prospects in the state's 2029 class thanks to his skill, strength and ability to make plays.     Beard used his size and length to drive the ball to the basket with success at the Sophomore ID Camp. At 6-foot-4 and with good balance and physical strength, Beard was a difficult matchup for opposing forwards. Beard was a key player for Rib Lake and its gifted frontline play last winter and seems poised to improve on his stat line of 6.6 ppg and 3.5 rpg as a frosh.     There seems to be an endless supply of strong backcourt players in Kenosha with the likes of [player_tooltip player_id='2371709' first='Mikey' last='White Jr.'], Mavin Jones, [player_tooltip player_id='2125768' first='Ryan' last='Papka'], [player_tooltip player_id='2354009' first='Reymundo' last='Garibay'], [player_tooltip player_id='2508296' first='Christopher' last='Kenesie'] and Johnny Roehl, among others, all excelling for their respective high school programs. You can now add Willis to that impressive list as the Indian Trail sophomore looks to move into a key role with the varsity squad in 2026-27. The shifty point guard possesses excellent moves off the dribble while also having the ability to knock down three-point shots.     Constantly in motion and able to impact the game in positive ways on both ends of the floor, Phillips showed more to his game than in the past on Saturday in Appleton. Known primarily as a good shooter during his freshman year at East Troy, Phillips did make some outside field-goal attempts, but he also scored off the dribble with his quickness while also making things hard for opposing guards with his length and aggressiveness. The son of East Troy coach Noah Phillips, Mason is a big part of the strong squad at East Troy.     Young players who understand how to play the game in multiple areas are not always easy to find. Rykal definitely stood out in Appleton with his ability to handle the ball, pass it and score it. He also had the poise and patience to wait for his teammates to get open before delivering a good pass. He did a stellar job of keeping his head up and zipping passes while also playing strong on-ball defense with his physical strength and athleticism. A very good all-around player who figures to be a fixture in the Bay Port lineup for his father/coach, Nate Rykal, the next four years.     Altoona is going to be a problem in the Middle Border Conference in 2026-27 with the return of senior guards [player_tooltip player_id='2140924' first='Graysen' last='Becker'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2405970' first='Owen' last='Gunderson']. You can add [player_tooltip player_id='2369875' first='Jacob' last='Kelbel'] to that list of strong players for the Rails. The gifted outside shooter also flashed the ability to use a ball fake to get defenders out of position before driving hard to score at the rim. Kelbel earned varsity minutes as a freshman and has advanced his game and physicality since the end of last season, making him an important piece for an Altoona team looking to win a league crown and make some noise in March.     Some might say Przybylski is the top returning player for the Polar Bears of Hortonville. That may or may not be the case, but there is no question Przybylski will be a hugely important player for coach Matt Hintz's squad this winter. His ability to shoot the ball is a huge plus as is his overall feel for the game and strong play on defense. Competing in the Fox Valley Association is a challenge, to say the least, but Przybylski appears poised to meet that challenge head on in 2026-27.     A very impressive athlete with a good basketball IQ, Humphrey was one of the more pleasant surprise players at the Sophomore ID Camp. His court awareness, passing ability to constant presence on the glass was outstanding during three-on-three play. He is very quick off his feet and is extremely competitive on both offense and defense. The Chargers of Sussex Hamilton have a very strong player in Humphrey and one who figures to be a top performer for the program the next three seasons.     One of the more complete players I saw among the 140-plus players at the Sophomore ID Camp, Klein consistently makes the right basketball play, either by scoring, passing, defending or rebounding. He has excellent size for a guard and can play backcourt position. He also can defender quick point guards or slide down and defender taller wings. Klein, who played varsity minutes as a freshman at Middleton, is a very smart, very poised and very good player in the state's 2029 class.     The more you watch Greve on the basketball court, the more you realize this young man has a bright future in the game. His size, length and skill are all solid, but what makes him even more intriguing is the possibility he is not done growing. He appears to still be gaining height to go along with his impressive length. Look for Greve to get better and better as he grows into his body, adds some weight and gains some strength.     Big, strong and thick, Bobholz moves pretty well on the court and proved to be a very good passer out of the high post in Appleton. He has excellent size at 6-foot-7 and he can definitely impact a game in the post. But he's also mobile enough to step away from the basket for a shot jump shot or deliver a pass to a cutting wing player. Bobholz is a key player for a Fall River team many expect to challenge for the title in the Trailways West Conference.
