Evanston defeats Thornwood

[player_tooltip player_id='2879381' first='Mekhi' last='Young'] — Thornwood

Thornwood guard [player_tooltip player_id='2879381' first='Mekhi' last='Young'] had his game in attack mode from the opening tip. The slick guard played with a quick pace and consistently looked to put pressure on the defense with the ball in his hands. Young showed impressive explosiveness getting downhill and nearly put a defender on a poster with an emphatic attempt at the rim. Even without the finish, his athleticism was on full display as he continued pushing the tempo and creating opportunities for his teammates. Young and Evanston's [player_tooltip player_id='2531970' first='Ben' last='Ojala'] appeared to be engaged in a back-and-forth battle, answering each other's big plays throughout the afternoon.

[player_tooltip player_id='2531970' first='Ben' last='Ojala'] — Evanston

Ojala was the offensive catalyst for Evanston. The strong-bodied guard shot the ball at a high clip and wasted little time getting into a rhythm. From the moment I walked into the gym, Ojala had already knocked down a pair of three-pointers before adding several difficult contested jumpers. He showed the ability to create space and get his shot off even when the defense was closing hard. Ojala's perimeter shot-making gave Evanston a steady scoring option throughout the matchup.

Perspectives Leadership defeats Rich Township

[player_tooltip player_id='2323675' first='Mikey' last='Woods'] — Perspectives Leadership

Woods wasted little time making his presence felt. Woods rattled home a three-pointer early and then began attacking the basket with a series of shifty moves. The 2027 guard consistently changed speeds and directions to create driving lanes, putting pressure on the Rich Township defense. Once he got downhill, Woods displayed the ability to finish or make the defense collapse. His combination of perimeter shooting and crafty drives made him difficult to contain.

[player_tooltip player_id='1874813' first='Jayden' last='Taylor'] — Perspectives Leadership

Woods wasn't alone in the backcourt. [player_tooltip player_id='1874813' first='Jayden' last='Taylor'] provided another difficult matchup for Rich Township with his ability to create offense from multiple areas of the floor. Taylor displayed a smooth mid-range pull-up while also using his handle to navigate through traffic and get into the lane. He also showed strong anticipation defensively, coming away with a couple of steals. Woods and Taylor formed a dynamic backcourt combination that helped Perspectives Leadership pull away for a double-digit victory.

Rich Township battled with a young roster, with most of its players also participating in football, according to information shared at the gym.

St. Laurence defeats Curie

[player_tooltip player_id='2323617' first='Markese' last='Peoples'] — St. Laurence

Peoples played with a physical edge and looked like a guard determined to control the game. He was aggressive with the ball in his hands and used his strength to create advantages. Peoples also made his presence felt defensively, turning a steal into a transition opportunity that ended with a dunk at the other end. His ability to immediately turn defense into offense gave the Vikings another weapon in the open floor.

[player_tooltip player_id='2385372' first='Noah' last='Corro'] — St. Laurence

Corro put together a stretch of plays that had the Hope Academy Fieldhouse buzzing. First, Corro jumped into a passing lane for a steal before finishing with a dunk. He followed that up by knocking down a deep three-pointer before coming away with another steal and converting a difficult reverse layup. It was a sequence that showcased his defensive instincts, confidence from deep and finishing ability around the basket.

From there, the final few minutes turned into an absolute dunk show for St. Laurence. [player_tooltip player_id='2715607' first='Kelechi' last='Enyia'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2532002' first='Jeremiah' last='Toney'] provided the fireworks, with both players throwing down athletic finishes as the Vikings continued to build their lead. The game eventually came to an early end with St. Laurence securing the double-digit victory.

[player_tooltip player_id='2540149' first='Tobyus' last='Banks'] — Curie

Banks was one of the bright spots for Curie. The guard showed impressive lateral quickness with the ball in his hands and repeatedly put defenders in difficult situations. His ability to change direction and attack off the bounce made him tough to stay in front of. [player_tooltip player_id='2877501' first='Malik' last='Horton'] also provided physical on-ball defense for Curie, but the team couldn't slow down St. Laurence's offensive attack enough to close the gap.
