2030 Watchlist: Wings/Bigs with long-term upside

The release of our <a href="https://prephoops.com/maryland/rankings/maryland-high-school-boys-basketball-2030-class-player-rankings/">initial 2030 watchlist</a> dropped earlier this week and we've spent the past few days breaking down the prospects in a variety of ways. For this article, I move onto the wings and bigs who project some long-term upside as they embark on their high school careers this fall. I was able to see a good chunk of these players live this summer as they got their first taste of varsity action in June for the Scholastic Live Period or summer league play. Nunez has a strong argument of being the most physically imposing freshman in the 2030 class for the DMV area as a whole. He's all of 6'7"-6'8" with a powerful frame that he knows how to use as he bulldozes his matchup inside the paint. Nunez has shown impressive instincts in establishing and winning the leverage game even when he's going against upperclassmen, which is apparent as the ball swings offensively as he slowly but surely gains ground to put himself in position for offensive boards. Typically with players Nunez's age, dependable hands haven't exactly surfaced especially when playing with high-level guards, but the [program_tooltip program_id='2078457' first='Team' last='Durant'] anchor has proven that if the ball is in his reach, he'll snag it in small windows and quickly adjust his touch to finish amongst the trees.     All of the prospects on our watchlist are at the beginning stages of their development and will require ample time before they're a finished product. Springs will be among that list that will need time to grow into his body, put on mass and polish his offensive skillset, but in the meantime, he brings intriguing size, length and ability to protect the rim. As he adjusts to the physicality and speed of the high school game, we'll get an idea of how quickly that development will take place, but in our early viewings he has the measurables and the flashes worthy enough to place some intriguing ROI on as he suits up for Boys' Latin this winter.     While there's plenty of development left ahead for Stanfield, he poses the frame of size, length and fluidity that scouts look for in long-term wings. He'll attend Towson High School where he should get a good chance of minutes within the rotation and benefit from being exposed to the varsity level. Like the majority of the freshmen but especially with these wings who are still putting everything together, the physicality could cause some issues for Stanfield, but as he adjusts, the ceiling with continue to increase. The southpaw showed ability to create off the dribble where he could rise over the top of his matchups in middle school. His length came into play in the transition where defenders' only solution was to foul him and make him earn it at the stripe. Stanfield is the nephew of [player_tooltip player_id='2265685' first='Billy' last='Stanfield III'], who currently ranks No. 5 overall in our 2028 rankings.     Cofield fits the mold as a prospect with the build that typically comes into fruition once he reaches his upperclassmen years. A wiry, 6'4"-6'5" forward heading to Mount St. Joseph to play under head coach Pat Clatchey, Cofield was one of the most highly sought after prospect in the class. At this stage, his movements, skillset and overall ability are ahead of others with a similar build, which indicate optimistic growth and long-term predictions as he goes through the maturation process. He'll be called upon early as a contributor in the varsity rotation and while the bumps are expected, watching how Cofield recovers/adjusts will speak volumes on determining just how high his ceiling will be.     Tomlinson is the most prepared to make a consistent impact of anyone on this list. In fact, if we had dropped actual rankings (likely to follow in the next update of this class), Tomlinson would've had one of the stronger arguments to be the top overall prospect. While the majority of 2030's will take time to learn how to impact for their respective programs, Tomlinson enters the rotation for a young, but extremely talented Gonzaga roster and brings size, strength, skill and athleticism. He's versatile enough defensively to toggle multiple positions and will offer head coach Keith Urgo the flexibility on both ends given his well-rounded ability. The most impressive aspect of Tomlinson's game to me personally is how willing of an off-ball presence he is. Most freshman approach their touches with a homerun or strikeout mentality whereas Tomlinson is a high-level cutter and never leaves the offensive end without applying pressure as a rebounder for second chance opportunities.
